    • A rotation transmission device includes an outer ring having an inner periphery and an inner ring mounted inside the outer ring and having an outer periphery. A control retainer and a rotary retainer are disposed between opposed surfaces of the outer ring and the inner ring, and each of the retainers has a flange and bridges provided at the radially outer side of the respective flange and arranged circumferentially alternately with the bridges of the other retainer thereby defining pockets between the adjacent bridges. The control retainer is axially slidably and rotatably supported and the rotary retainer is axially immovably and rotatably supported. An electromagnetic clutch is mounted on a torque transmission shaft and includes an electromagnet having an electromagnetic coil, the electromagnetic clutch being configured to axially move the control retainer when the electromagnetic coil is energized and deenergized.

    • An imaging apparatus which can provide a uniform magnetic field distribution in an image pickup device and can be reduced in size includes an electron emission source array with a plurality of electron emission sources arranged on a plane perpendicular to an optical axis, and a translucent substrate having an optoelectronic film disposed on the optical axis to be opposed to the electron emission source array with a space therebetween. The imaging apparatus has a magnet portion for forming in the space a magnetic field in a direction orthogonal to each principal plane of the translucent substrate and the electron emission source array. The magnet portion includes a plurality of magnets which are disposed in parallel to the optical axis so that the respective magnetic poles thereof are arranged in a forward direction in parallel to the optical axis and will not contact with each other.

    • A rotation transmission device is provided which has a minimum play in the rotational direction, which is reliable by preventing the rollers from erroneously engaging during idling, and which has high torque capacity. A control retainer 19A and a rotary retainer 19B are mounted between an outer race 11 having a cylindrical surface 17 on its inner periphery and an inner race 12 having cam surfaces 18 on its outer periphery. An opposed pair of rollers 25 are mounted in each of pockets 24 defined between pillars 21 and 23 of the respective retainers 19A and 19B. A presser member 26 is also mounted in each pocket 24 which biases the pair of rollers 25 away from each other while pressing the rollers against the cam surface 18. A plurality of torque cams 40 are provided between flanges 20 and 22 of the control retainer 19A and the rotary retainer 19B. When the control retainer 19A is moved toward a rotor 52 by the actuation of an electromagnetic clutch 50, the torque cams 40 rotate the control retainer 19A and the rotary retainer 19B in the direction in which the circumferential width of the pockets 24 decreases, thereby disengaging the opposed pairs of rollers 25. When the control retainer 19A is moved away from the rotor 52, the control retainer 19A and the rotary retainer 19B are rotated relative to each other in the direction in which the circumferential width of the pockets 24 increases under the biasing force of the presser members 26, thereby engaging the rollers 25. While the inner race 12 is idling, the presser members 26 prevent the rollers 25 from moving radially outwardly, thereby preventing erroneous engagement of the rollers 25.

An oil supply passage supplies oil to the pressure chamber and a check valve allows only oil flow into the pressure chamber, and includes an annular valve seat, a check ball movable into and out of contact with the valve seat, and a check ball retainer formed by drawing. The retainer includes a tubular portion with a bottom at one end. The tubular portion has an opening, formed by punching outwardly, through which oil can flow in and out. The opening extends to a border between the tubular portion and the bottom of the retainer.

    • A rotation transmission device which can quickly change the direction of rotation includes an inner ring having cam surfaces on its outer periphery, an outer ring having a cylindrical surface on its inner periphery, and pairs of circumferentially opposed rollers, the rollers of each pair being disposed between one of the cam surfaces and the cylindrical surface to be circumferentially opposed to each other. A roller separation spring is disposed between the rollers of each pair of rollers to bias the rollers away from each other so that the rollers are wedged between the cam surface and the cylindrical surface. The rollers are retained by a roller retainer which can change the distance between the rollers of each pair of rollers. By reducing the distance between the rollers of each pair of rollers with the roller retainer, the rollers can be disengaged from the cam surfaces and the cylindrical surface.

    • A chain tensioner includes a plunger axially slidably inserted in the cylinder for pressing a chain. The plunger defines in the cylinder a pressure chamber filled with hydraulic oil. The volume of the pressure chamber is variable with the axial movement of the plunger. The pressure chamber communicates with the outside of the cylinder through a restricted passage defined between sliding surfaces of the plunger and the cylinder. A spring biases the plunger in a direction to increase the volume of the pressure chamber. The cylinder is formed with an oil supply passage through which the pressure chamber communicates with the outside of the cylinder. The chain tensioner further includes a check valve which allows only a flow of hydraulic oil through the oil supply passage from the outside of the cylinder to the pressure chamber. The check valve includes an annular valve seat, a check ball which is movable into and out of contact with the valve seat, and a retainer formed by drawing and retaining the check ball. The retainer includes a tubular portion and a bottom at one end of the tubular portion. The tubular portion of the retainer is formed with an opening through which hydraulic oil can flow into and out of the retainer. The opening extends to a border between the tubular portion and the bottom of the retainer and is formed by punching the tubular portion from inside to outside thereof.
