    • A system (2, 2') and method for chemiluminescent detection of trace explosives is provided utilizing a reagent solution (64) of phenyloxalate esters and organic dyes in a solvent to detect peroxide-based explosives. The reagent solution (64) is added directly to a sample substrate (55, 94) and immediately analyzed under minimal light conditions. In an alternative method, a test sample is dissolved in a solvent before being mixed with a first acid based reagent, the pH is adjusted, and the resultant solution is mixed with a reagent (64) comprising phenyloxalate esters and organic dyes. Iron salts, peroxidase enzymes or heat may optionally be utilized to enhance the chemical reactions. A chemiluminescent reaction of the reagent (64) with any explosive present on the substrate (55, 94) can be analyzed and recorded visually, or utilizing an analyzing apparatus (68), such as a fluorimeter or camera. A computer may also be utilized to interpret and record test results.

    • A system (2, 2') and method for detecting trace explosives is provided that utilizes a lumnescent reagent (64), such as blue-fluorescent biphenyl compound, to simultaneously detect multiple nitrogen-based explosives on a sample substrate (55, 94). The test reagent (64) is mixed with a solvent to improve mixing and maximize the dissolution of the reagent (64) and any trace explosives present on the substrate (55, 94). A thin film of reagent (64) is applied to the substrate (55, 94) either before or after the substrate (55, 94) contacts a sample area to be tested. Heated air is then applied to the substrate (55, 94) to improve the sample reading. A light source (297) is utilized to illuminate the reagent (64) and expose any quenched portions of the substrate that indicate the presence of an explosive. Quenched portions may be detected visually, or utilizing an analyzing apparatus (68), such as a fluorimeter or camera. A computer may also be utilized to interpret and record test results.
