Nitro-glycerin.-Relates to the manufacture of nitro-glycerin, and consists in adding water to the waste acids after the separation of the nitro-glycerin, so as to dispense with the process of "after separation." The apparatus described in Specification No. 15,983, A.D. 1901, [Abridgment Class Ammunition &c.], may be used for the process, the separation of the nitro-glycerin being started at such an initial temperature, that the final temperature, after the addition of all the displacing acid, shall not be lower than 15‹ C. On the completion of the separation, the liquid is air-stirred, and, if the nitrating- acids contain 5 per cent. of water, then water, equal in weight to 2 per cent. of the waste acids formed, is added, but if the nitrating-acids contain less than 4 per cent. of water, or if the temperature be lower than 15‹ C., from 3 to 5 per cent. of water is required. During the addition of water, the contents are air-stirred but not cooled, a further quantity of displacing-acid being admitted after the agitation has been stopped. The operation can be carried out with the plant ordinarily used, as well as with that described in the prior Specification.

Nitro-cellulose.-Relates to a method of removing the water left in nitro-cellulose after washing, by replacing the water by alcohol, to avoid the necessity of drying. The purified nitro-cellulose is covered with water, and alcohol is run quietly on to the surface, forming a separate layer. The water is allowed to escape slowly at the bottom of the vessel, fresh alcohol being added at top. The operation is continued until the density of the alcohol leaving the vessel is the same as that entering it.

摘要： 8278. Thomson, J. M., and Thomson, W. T. April 9. Nitro-cellulose.-In the manufacture of nitro-cellulose, the waste acids are removed by direct displacement with water. The nitrating- vessel a is provided with a perforated false bottom b, supported on the base c by means of ribs c , the outlet pipe being provided with a perforated plate e. A charge of nitrating-acids is introduced by the pipe m, the cellulose is then added, and sulphuric acid, or other inert liquid, having a density not greater than that of the waste acids formed, is run on to the surface of liquids from the tank k through the pipes h, h into the perforated troughs f and down the depending aprons g. When the nitration is complete, water is run gently on to the surface through the tubes h, h , and the acid slowly drawn off. The first part of the nitration may be carried out with waste acid from a previous operation, and the apparatus may be used merely for washing purposes, the nitro-cellulose being introduced, covered with waste acid, and treated as described above. The process may be carried out in an ordinary centrifugal nitrating machine, which is used to effect preliminary drying after the acid separation. The acids and water may be supplied to the centrifugal machines or other vessels by perforated pipes lying along the edges of the nitrating-vessels.
