    • 686,440. Pressure-reducing valves. GLEDHILL, E. G. B., and YOUNG, T. N. Nov. 29, 1950 [June 27, 1950], No. 16049/50. Class 135. In a pressure reducing valve comprising a compound diaphragm 15 separating the high pressure side of the valve from a control chamber 24 communicating with the low pressure side thereof, the face of the diaphragm towards the control chamber being of greater effective area than that exposed to the high pressure, the valve seat is constituted by the top of a barrier 14 extending completely across the valve passage and the face of the diaphragm exposed to the high pressure bears directly on such seat when the valve is closed. The compound diaphragm may consist of two diaphragms which bear against one another over a part only of their opposed faces or which bear against a loose spacer 36 between them. As shown, the diaphragm parts 16, 20 are spaced at their edges by a ring 18 shaped to grip a larger area of the part 16 than of the part 20. The parts 16, 18, 20 are clamped at their edges by a cover 22. The spacer 36 is surrounded by a rolling rubber ring 38 which damps the movements of the diaphragm parts. The control chamber 24 is connected to the outlet or low pressure passage 10 by passages 26, 28, 30. The unoccupied space 32 between the diaphragm parts 16, 20 has a connection 34 to the atmosphere. The bridge 14 separates semicircular ports at the ends of the inlet and outlet passages 8, 10. In valves of a smaller type, the diaphragm parts are integrally connected by a central connecting block. Specification 322,993, [Class 135], is referred to.

    • 601,278. Refrigerating. YOUNG, T. N., and GLEDHILL, E. G. B. Oct. 12, 1945, No. 26756. [Class 29] [Also in Group XXVIII] Apparatus for temporarily stopping a pipe to effect repairs comprises two closed refrigerating chambers adapted to be assembled round the pipe and each having a charging opening for a refrigerant. The two parts are hinged together by a pin 3 engaging lugs 4, springs 5 normally urging the parts together, the inner walls of the chambers being shaped to fit closely on the pipe or on a two-part liner 41. A series of liners having different internal diameters is provided, and each half liner is flanged and secured by spring-pressed ball catches 48. Each chamber has a charging opening in a side wall and in one of its end walls, closed by interchangeable plugs 14, 18, The chambers are charged with a mixture of solid carbon dioxide and methylated spirit, the plug 14 having a small gas vent 16 and the plug 18 having a safety-valve 19, the plug 14 being arranged in the side or end opening according to whether the pipe is horizontal or vertical. The chambers are secured together by a channelshaped locking bar 23 which engages grooved flanges on the chambers, and carries a handle 24.

    • 586,226. Refrigerating systems. YOUNG, T. N., and GLEDHILL, E. G. B. Dec. 18, 1944, No. 25357. [Class 29] [Also in Group XXVIII] Apparatus for temporarily stopping a liquidcontaining pipe in order to effect repairs comprises means for forming an ice plug including a container formed in two parts 1, 2 hinged together at 5 which is adapted to be assembled around the pipe to hold a charge of a refrigerant such as solid carbon dioxide which makes contact with the pipe. Split gaskets 12 are located in grooves in the sides of the chamber and closely encircle the pipe. Solid carbon dioxide is placed in the chamber before the parts are secured together by the clamping bolt 9, and methylated spirit is introduced through the charging funnel 14 to enhance the cooling effect, gaseous carbon dioxide evolved being allowed to escape through a cock 17. An insulating jacket 18 is provided. In a modification the parts of the cylindrical chamber are arranged so that the pipe is eccentric to the chamber, and after the larger half of the chamber has been packed with refrigerant it is inverted to effect refrigeration. A perforated tube extending through the chamber contains a drying agent. Two-part metal liners may be inserted within the chamber to accommodate pipes of a different diameter. Specifications 586,225 and 586,228, [Group XXVIII], are referred to.

[Class 29] [Also in Group XXVIII] A portable device for temporarily freezing a short length of liquid-containing pipe so as to effect repairs comprises refrigerating apparatus including a power-unit and a compressor for the refrigerant and means for circulating the refrigerant through a chamber adapted to be assembled around the pipe. The chamber which with its flexible connections is normally mounted on the portable casing of the power-unit and compressor comprises semi-cylindrical parts 11, 12 hinged together at 13 and having inner cylindrical surfaces 20, 21 which are adapted to be clamped on to the pipe by a bolt 14. The flexible refrigerant supply pipe 7 is connected to a rigid inlet tube 23 secured on the chamber and containing a coiled tube 24 through which the refrigerant is delivered to the evaporated chamber 25. The refrigerant passes through passages 28, 33 and the bore 30 of the hinge to the lower expansion chamber 27 and back to the compressor through a flexible pipe 6. Insulating casings 39, 40 are provided and the device is adapted for pipes of different sizes by the provision of two-part liners having end flanges which engage ball catches (not shown) in an end face of the chamber. In a modification the refrigerant is admitted to the upper evaporating chamber through a spring-pressed valve, the upper and lower chambers being connected by a flexible pipe. In a further modification the evaporating chambers are arranged in parallel, the refrigerant being divided into two streams one passing through each chamber the streams being united on leaving the chambers. Specification 586,228, [Group XXVIII], is referred to.

    • 322,993. Young, T. N. June 11, 1929. Pressure - reducing valves. - In a pressure-governing valve for controlling, for instance, the water supply from a main to a house system the valve member b is controlled by differential diaphragms, one c being exposed only to the outlet pressure whilst the other d is subjected only to inlet pressure, the area of that on the low pressure side being greater than the other. The valve member b is provided with an axial passage b to admit pressure from the outlet to the chamber containing the larger diaphragm. A manually operable screwed spindle k is provided so that the valve member may be secured in either the closed or open position. In a modified form, the spindle may be omitted, the valve operating automatically only. The valve is also applicable to the control of air, steam, gases, and other fluids.
