    • An improved method for determining the presence of an analyte in an oral fluid sample. In the method, a reaction mixture is produced containing at least a portion of the collected sample and a chromogenic substrate effective to produce a colored product upon reaction with amylase present in the sample. After a selected reaction time, the reaction medium is inspected to determine the level of colored product produced in the medium within the selected reaction time. Production of colored product above a preselected threshold level within the selected reaction time indicates that an effective volume of undiluted saliva sample has been collected sufficient to allow detection of the analyte. The invention also includes a device for use in the method.
