    • This method and apparatus for pneumatic preloading of linear bearing assemblies is based on typical slide assemblies having ball bearing sets in rolling engagement with opposed and confronting bearing races slidably joining a base and a slide member. For adjustably preloading the bearing races, at least one and preferably a plurality of flexible, laterally expanding pneumatic tubes are positioned between a solid portion of the base and an adjustable member supporting a bearing race. Air pressure is then applied to the flexible tube(s), causing it/them to expand laterally and force confronting bearing races together to preload the bearing races. The adjustable member is then tightly secured to the base and the air pressure is removed. The tube(s) are left in position in a deflated state, and can be reused to perform the same procedure should it become necessary at a later time during the life of the assembly.

    • A male slide member, which is mounted to reciprocate in a rectangular recess formed in the face of a base member, is supported at one side thereof by a plurality of ball bearings for substantially friction-free movement with respect to one side of the recess, and is supported at its opposite side by an elongate bearing rod carried by the male slide member to have frictional, sliding movement with respect to a pair of spaced, parallel bearing surfaces that extend longitudinally of the other side of the recess in the base member. The bearing rod has formed in its periphery longitudinally spaced gear teeth which mesh with the teeth of a pinion gear mounted on the base member to rotate adjacent the bearing rod, and selectively to drive the rod and its attached slide member in opposite directions.

    • The inventive structure involves the provision and use of a rotating, fluted, impeller having sling compartments along a side thereof in which frangible materials are progressively introduced, are subjected to impaction with respect to each other and from which, after a build-up of radial angular velocity of the bodies, are projected forwardly radially outwardly with maximized face against a striker abutment and each other within a side-positioned quadrant zone. Thereafter, the broken-up material bodies are advanced past a somewhat tangentially converging forward, space-restricting end of an adjustment plate which may be one member of a striker abutment assembly, by the impeller into a separating zone or passageway along which a fluid stream is counterflowed with respect to rotation of the impeller and employed to substantially immediately separate out broken-up particulates of a desired size from particles of greater than the desired size, with particles being returned to the impeller compartments and recycled with newly introduced material bodies and with the particulates being carried out of the apparatus by the fluid stream. The shaft of the impeller has a balanced, two-way, supporting, working area isolated, bearing mounting.

    • The two sets of ball bearings which support an inverted, generally U-shaped slide on the base member of the assembly are carried in the leg sections of an inverted, generally U-shaped ball cage which is positioned between the base member and slide. A piston which is reciprocated by compressed air in a bore in the base member, is connected to the two leg sections of the ball cage by a dowel pin, whereby reciprocation of the piston is imparted to the ball cage and the bearings supported therein. A cylindrical copupling pin which is rotatably mounted intermediate its ends in a slot in the central portion of the ball cage, projects at opposite ends thereof slidably and rotatably into registering, diagonal grooves formed in confronting surfaces of the base member and slide, thereby coupling the cage to the slide and base member for movement in unison by the piston.
