    • A disk file apparatus including an accommodating shelf having a multiplicity of accommodating spaces provided therein in a row in the vertical direction, a multiplicity of cartridges disposed in the accommodating spaces, respectively, each having a disk received therein, a coder which writes or reads information in relation to either the side A or B of the disk received in each of the cartridges, and a carrier arranged such as to move vertically along the front surface of the accommodating shelf, draw out one of the multiplicity of cartridges, and load the cartridge into the coder after turning the cartridge through 180 degrees according to need. The disk file apparatus is provided with a transfer mechanism disposed at the side of the apparatus which is closer to the accommodating shelf. The transfer mechanism has a feed and discharge port through which a cartridge is taken in from and discharged to the outside, and a moving mechanism which is rotatable back and forth to make a half turn during a cartridge feed or discharge operation so as to reach a position where it is able to exchange a cartridge with the carrier. Accordingly, there is no fear of the transfer mechanism interfering with the vertical travel path of the carrier, and it is therefore possible to dispose the transfer mechanism at any position in the apparatus.

    • A cartridge handling mechanism for use in a disk file system having a stocker in which a multiplicity of thin cartridges respectively having disks accommodated therein are respectively accommodated in a multiplicity of accommodating shelves in parallel to each other, a player for writing and reading data onto and from the disk in each cartridge, and a carrier linearly moved along the front side of the stocker. The carrier has a pair of engagement members selectively engaged with a pair of grooves respectively provided in two side end surfaces at one end of each of the cartridges, so that a selected cartridge is drawn out of the stocker by means of the pair of engagement members, moved to a position facing the front side of the player by the operation of the carrier and then pushed out from the carrier and inserted into the player by the action of the engagement members. The pair of engagement members are formed so as to have bisymmetrical configurations in which their respective distal ends are bent inward at substantially right angles and each of the bent portions has a convex outer surface. Accordingly, a selected cartridge is directly pushed into the player by means of the engagement members and allowed to drop so as to be set in the player without being caught by a surface thereof which is in contact with the engagement members.

    • A device for storing and retrieving cassettes includes a casing in which a plurality of cassettes are stored in a radial array about a vertically disposed axis. A carrier for transferring a selected cassette from the casing to a processor is pivotally mounted on the same axis as the casing for rotational movement about said axis. The carrier device is vertically moveable for alignment with different radial arrays of cassettes and the carrier is provided with a cassette gripper device which is horizontally moveable into said casing for gripping a selected cassette. The cassette gripping means is also mounted for rotational movement about a horizontal axis on the carrier device so that the cassette gripped thereby may be rotated to present one side or the other of a double sided disc within the cassette for processing.

    • A disk file apparatus including a transfer member disposed at the upper side of a shelf for accommodating a multiplicity of cartridges each receiving a disk both sides of which are able to be subjected to recording and reproducing, each cartridge having a forward extending groove formed in the rear portion thereof. The transfer member has lever means which is arranged such that, when a cartridge having the same rating as that of said cartridges is inserted into the transfer member, the lever means detects whether or not there is a groove which is formed in the rear portion of the cartridge. The apparatus further includes a controller which is arranged such that, when the lever means detects the groove formed in the rear portion of the cartridge inserted in the transfer member, the controller activates a carrier to turn the cartridge through 180 degrees while the cartridge is being moved from the transfer member to an empty accommodating space in the accommodating shelf, and when the downward side of the disk received in the selected cartridge is not coincident with the side which is to be subjected to writing or reading of information in the coder, the controller activates the carrier to turn the selected cartridge through 180 degrees before it is loaded into the coder. Accordingly, all the cartridges accommodated in the accommodating spaces have the disks facing downward. Thus, the judgement as to which side of the disk in a selected cartridge faces downward need not be made between the selection of the cartridge and the loading of the selected cartridge into the coder, and therefore it is possible to shorten the access time.
