    • The invention relates to an electrooptical system which between 2 electrode layers contains a liquid crystal mixture and a further optically transparent polymer medium, in which one of the electrode layers is in the form of an active matrix having nonlinear addressing elements integrated with the image point, while the other electrode layer forms the counter electrode, whose liquid crystal molecules have irregular orientation in the switched-off state, in which one of the refractive indices of the liquid crystal mixture is substantially the same as the refractive index of the medium n.sub.m and/or in which the quotient from the weight of the liquid crystal mixture and the weight of the optically transparent medium is 1.5 or more, which is one of the two switching states has reduced transmission compared with the other state independently of the polarization of the incident light, in which the liquid crystal mixture contains at least one compound of the formula I and the absolute value of the difference between the solubility parameter of the liquid crystal mixture and the solubility parameter of the precursor of the optically transparent polymer medium does not exceed 1.5 at room temperature.

    • An improved ferroelectric liquid crystal light shutter device formed of an array of light shutter elements, each including a ferroelectric liquid crystal exhibiting a chiral smectic phase. The light shutter elements are divided into a plurality of groups for multiplexing in accordance with a predetermined duty ratio. The formerly memorized states of the light shutter elements belonging to one of the groups and the light shutter elements to be addressed in the next scanning sequence are erased. Thereafter, the erased light shutter elements are turned into a memorized "ON-state" or "OFF-state" in accordance with image data signals. The formerly memorized states of the light shutter elements other than those which are erased or memorized are maintained by the application of predetermined voltage levels.

    • The liquid crystal material for use in a thermal writing liquid crystal element. The material contains essentially two components (a) and (c) or three components (a), (b) and (c);(a) one or more than one of the compounds represented by the formula (I): ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 means a straight chain alkoxy radical, the carbon atom number n.sub.1 of which is 8, 9 or 10;(b) one or more than one of the compounds represented by the formula (II); ##STR2## wherein R.sub.2 means a straight chain alkyl radical, the carbon atom number n.sub.2 of which is 8 or 9; and(c) one or more than one of the compounds represented by the formula (III); ##STR3## wherein R.sub.3 means a straight chain alkyl or alkoxy radical, the carbon atom number of which is 8, 9, 10, 11 or 12.By such combinations of the components the material having a broad liquid crystal phase temperature range and enabling erasion at a low electric potential is obtained.
