摘要： A software conditional access system (CAS) for media services provided to a Media Distribution Device, such as a set top box (STB), is disclosed. The STB may be connected to a Media Delivery Service Provider via a broadband connection. Over the broadband connection, a CAS application may be downloaded to the STB, maintained and dynamically updated. Because the CAS is implemented by software on the STB, it is inexpensive to install, maintain and update. When a user desires to purchase media services through the STB, a request, with identifying information, is sent to the Media Delivery Service Provider via the broadband connection. The service provider cross-references the identifying information with a user's account to determine whether to allow the user to view the media service requested. If the service provider determines to allow the user to view the media service, the user's account (typically maintained by the service provider) is charged and a key is downloaded via the broadband connection to the STB. The key allows the user to view the requested media service to be presented for user viewing, hearing or other use. After the requested media service ends, after a predetermined amount of time, etc., the CAS application may delete the key.

摘要： An interactive media delivery system enables interactive media programming to a multimedia device and also tracks a subscriber's use of the multimedia device. For example, the device tracks events, such as a change in programming, a change in channel selection, and/or the subscriber's interaction with a particular interactive services application. Each event may be stored as an event record in a database, and one or more of the event records may be merged with content data to form event timelines of programming or other activity to the multimedia device over a selected time period. Further, timelines may be analyzed to generate ratings and other information about programming and may also be correlated with demographics data for marketing analysis.

The media programming is received and includes at least one of a live media program and a recorded media program. Display is caused of the media programming and a cue. The cue prompts the viewer during presentation of the media programming to provide a response to the cue within a time period. Upon receiving the response to the cue within the time period, then the response is detected and a response time of the response is measured. The response time is a time between occurrence of the cue and receipt of the response. The viewer's performance is evaluated by comparing the response time to a reference response time.

For example, the viewer may be prompted during a program to provide an indicated response to an event within an indicated time period. Thereafter, the indicated response to the event may be detected, a response time of the indicated response to the event may be measured, viewer performance may be evaluated based upon the response time, and the incentive may be presented to the viewer based upon the response time. According to an exemplary embodiment, a viewer actuates a pushbutton key of a set-top box remote control unit and a signal that corresponds with the key is transmitted to and recorded by the set-top box. Other exemplary embodiments include a media delivery device for providing incentives, rewards, discounts, marketing data, and/or measurements to the viewer and a media delivery network.
