    • Filter apparatus for filtering contaminants from a fluid, such as machine tool coolant, are disclosed. One filter apparatus includes a filter drum unit having a generally cylindrical open perforated support sheet with a cylindrical screen element mounted thereabout. Circumference varying mechanisms, such as turnbuckles, are connected relative to the support plate to vary the circumference of the support plate and the tautness of the screen element. A disc filter assembly having a mandrel and fluidly attached annular disc filter elements is also described. Each annular disc filter element has an inner structure with concentric ribs forming concentric grooves therebetween which are connected to radially extending grooves. A screen element is supported by the ribs so that the microscreen will not tear while allowing filtering of fluid into the grooves which are in fluid communication with the mandrel. A disc filter assembly having a mandrel in fluid communication with a plurality of rectangular disc filter elements is also described. Each disc filter element has a rectangular inner structure which is pleated or folded in an accordion-like fashion. A retainer secures screen elements about the inner structure to prevent contaminants from passing therebetween.

    • A machine tool coolant filtering system (10) is disclosed as including a plurality of coolant filter tanks (12). Each filter tank (12) is designated for receiving coolant carrying a different material contaminant. A fluid control communication system (22) controls the communication of coolant from the machine tools to the coolant filter tanks (12). A liquid level sensor (40) senses coolant level within a respective tank (12). A modulating valve (46) in communication with the liquid level sensing means (40) senses the liquid level in the respective tank (12). If the coolant level in its respective tank (12) falls below a threshold range, the respective modulating valve (46) is closed to restrict coolant from being removed from its respective tank (12) to maintain the coolant level in the respective tank. If the coolant level in the respective tank (12) rises above the threshold range, the respective modulating valve (46) is opened to allow removal of coolant, to maintain the coolant level within the threshold range in each coolant filter tank (12). The coolant filtering system (10) segregates different material contaminants carried by common machine tool coolant for recycling.

    • An improved media filtration apparatus includes an upper tank for holding dirty liquid and a lower filtrate compartment for receiving liquid from the upper tank through a filter media. A guide roller mounted above the tank guides the filter media downwardly into the tank. A filter media feed mechanism mounting a roll of filter media is mounted adjacent the guide roller. The filter media feed mechanism includes a brake mechanism for stopping and releasing the feed mechanism. A rotatable tension roller movably mounted for generally vertical movement in a range of motion between the feed mechanism and the guide roller is cooperably connected to the brake mechanism for actuating the stopping and subsequent releasing of the feed mechanism and filter media. The brake mechanism is actuable by the rotatable tension roller to release filter media as the tension roller moves upwardly to an upper limit of its range of motion and the brake mechanism is applied as the tension roller moves downwardly to a lower limit of its range of motion.

    • A machine tool coolant filtering system (10) is disclosed as including a plurality of coolant filter tanks (12). Also a method is disclosed which includes identifying particular contaminants in tool coolant and selectively directing the tool coolant to a particular filter tank (12) designated to filter out that contaminant from the tool coolant. A fluid control communication system (22) controls the communication of coolant from the machine tools to the coolant filter tanks (12). A liquid level sensor (40) senses coolant level within a respective tank (12). A modulating valve (46) in communication with the liquid level (40) senses the liquid level in the respective tank (12). If the coolant level in its respective tank (12) falls below a threshold range, the respective modulating valve (46) is closed to restrict coolant from being removed from its respective tank (12) to maintain the coolant level in the respective tank. If the coolant level in the respective tank (12) rises above the threshold range, the respective modulating valve (46) is opened to allow removal of coolant, to maintain the coolant level within the threshold range in each coolant filter tank (12). The system is operated so as segregate different material contaminants produced by one or more machine tools.
