    • In a communication system that includes a control terminal (CT), a relay apparatus (RA), and a plurality user equipment (UE) that wirelessly communicate with the CT through the RA, a method for performing transmission control includes the CT receiving an RA-CT downlink signal that originated from a UE, determining a frequency-of-arrival (FoA) error from the RA-CT downlink signal (where the FoA error results at least in part from an error in a UE time reference with respect to a CT time reference), and providing, to the UE, a transmit frequency control (TFC) feedback signal that indicates the error in the UE time reference. The UE produces an adjusted UE uplink carrier frequency signal that compensates for the error in the UE time reference as indicated in the TFC feedback signal, and upconverts and transmits a UE-RA uplink signal using the adjusted UE uplink carrier frequency signal.

    • Additional resources and services are provided in a satellite communication system (100) through the use of seam satellites (52). One or more seam satellites (52) are coupled to communication satellites (12) in an existing constellation using previously unused crosslinks. The seam satellites (52) are located between orbital planes (31 and 36) in which the communication satellites (12) are moving in opposite directions with respect to each other. Seam satellites (52) can provide new services such as earth sensing and observation. Seam satellites (52) can also provide attachment points for other new space-based users. Some of the communication units (26) can communicate with the seam satellites (52) via communication satellites (12). This allows these communication units (26) to use the new services provided by the seam satellite (52). Seam satellites (52) can be controlled by separate control centers or can be controlled by the control center for the communication satellites (12).

    • The present invention describes a communications system that utilizes frequency division multiple access (FDMA), code division multiple access (CDMA), and time division multiple access (TDMA) techniques for providing efficient use of frequency spectrum while supporting a large number of transmitters/users (2-6). Many users of the communications system share a common frequency band, but each transmit their respective message bursts (50) at different and specific times via a TDMA technique. To facilitate synchronization of the TDMA technique, each transmitter of the system is synchronized to a common timing reference (1) thereby abating the need to maintain synchronization between the transmitters (2-6) and receivers (8-12) of the system. Each TDMA message is then transmitted via a spread spectrum technique by multiplying (82) the message burst to be transmitted by a pseudo-random sequence of ones and zeroes (84) and transmitting such spread spectrum message burst for reception by one or more receivers within the system.
