    • An ammonium gas sensor is provided. The ammonium gas sensor includes: a solid electrolyte layer having oxygen ion conductivity; a detection electrode formed on one surface of the solid electrolyte layer; a reference electrode that is a counter electrode of the detection electrode; a selective reaction layer covering the detection electrode; and a protection layer covering the selective reaction layer and made from a porous material; wherein the detection electrode includes a noble metal as a main component; the selective reaction layer includes oxide represented by AxMyOz as a main component, where A is one or more kind(s) of metal, M is vanadium, tungsten, or molybdenum and x, y, z are atomic ratios; and the protection layer includes the oxide that is in an amount smaller than a content of the oxide included in the selective reaction layer.

    • A gas sensor having a laminate structure composed of thin sheets of solid electrolyte and including a cavity portion 21 and an oxygen concentration cell 5. The oxygen concentration in the cavity portion 21 is held constant. The oxygen concentration cell 5 includes an active electrode 12 having a relatively high catalytic capability with respect to NOx or combustible gas and an inner common electrode 13/15 (serving as an inactive electrode and an oxygen-concentration-sensing electrode) having a relatively low catalytic capability with respect to NOx or combustible gas. The oxygen concentration cell 5 is disposed in the gas sensor so as to be exposed to the interior of the cavity portion 21. The concentration of NOx or combustible gas is determined based on an electromotive force (of the order of mV) generated between the active electrode 12 and the inner common electrode 13/15 by a concentration cell effect.

    • In accordance with the present invention, there is provided an exhaust gas sensor which comprises an oxygen pump cell made of solid electrolyte having an oxygen ion conductivity, an oxygen sensor cell made of solid electrolyte having an oxygen ion conductivity and disposed in opposition to the pump cell in such a manner as to define therebetween a detection space, and a semiconductor detection element made of oxide semiconductor and disposed in the detection space for detecting a predetermined detected substance in the exhaust gas introduced to the detection space. The concentration of oxygen in the detection space is regulated so as to be included within a predetermined range through control of charge or discharge of oxygen into or from the detection space by means of the oxygen pump cell on the basis of the concentration of oxygen in the exhaust gas, which is detected by the oxygen sensor cell.
