    • A method is provided of encoding a signature string X that is to be searched for within a search string. Each character in the search string is one of n characters of an alphabet and each character in the signature string X is one of the n characters or a wildcard character. The method comprising: encoding the signature string X into a first part B and a second part R with reference to a dictionary comprising a plurality of codes. The first part B identifies which, if any, characters of the signature string X are wildcard characters. The second part R is formed by, for each character in the signature string X that is not a wildcard character, retrieving a code from the dictionary based on the character and its position within the signature string X, the dictionary holding a different code for each such character-position pairing, and combining the retrieved codes according to a predetermined logical operation (e.g. XOR) to form the second part R. A method is also provided for searching for a signature string within a search string. The methods proposed are particularly suitable for use on Single Instruction Multiple Data (SIMD) architectures, such as Graphical Processing Units, and use of the methods is proposed for classifying traffic in a communications or computer network.

    • A monitoring system is provided for monitoring transport of data through interconnected nodes for processing data packets in a communication system, wherein said data packets conform to a layered transmission protocol, the system comprising : (1) a marking node for marking a packet selected according to a marking rule by placing a monitoring indicator in the lowest protocol layer thereof, said data packet having a first number of protocol layers, (2) at least, one packet processing node for forming a data packet based or the marked packet, such that said formed data packet comprises a second number of protocol layers that is different from said first number of protocol layers and such that said indicator is in the lowest protocol layer of said formed data packet, and (3) a monitoring node for monitoring said transport of data on the basis of the indicators in data packets that have passed through the at least one packet processing node.

    • There is provided a method of processing, analysing or profiling traffic in a packet switched telecommunications network. During a first phase (S1 to S4), for each of a plurality of applications, traffic generated by the application is analysed (S2) to identify a collection of one or more characteristic bit sequences for the application, or at least such a plurality of collections is provided. During a second phase (S5 to S11), traffic is received from the network (S5), and the following steps are performed for each of at least one of the plurality of collections: (i) for each of at least one of the characteristic bit sequences in the collection: a sequence alignment process (S8) is performed on the received traffic against the characteristic bit sequence to derive a per-sequence score; and (ii) a per-collection score is assigned to the collection (S10) based on the per- sequence scores for the collection, the per-collection score being indicative of a likelihood that the traffic was generated by the application associated with the collection.
