[Classes 7 (v) and 7 (vi)] In an engine having a blower for supplying supercharge air to the cylinder and having valves on the cylinders for admitting starting- air at higher pressure, a change-over device is arranged to put the starting-valves in communication either with the supercharge blower or with a starting-air pipe, and the starting- valves have two sets of actuating-members, one for actuating them during normal working to admit supercharge air, and the other for actuating them at starting. As shown in Fig. 1 the starting-air supply pipe 1 is connected by a cut-off valve 2 and pipe 3 to the casing 4 of a double valve 5, from which a pipe 10 leads to the starting-air admission valve 12. The valve member 5 comprises a valve part 8 controlling communication between the pipes 3, 10, and a valve part 9 controlling communication between the pipe 10 and the supply pipe '40 for supercharge air. A piston 6 on the valve member 5 is actuated by a spring 7 and the space above the piston is connected by pipe 22 to a changeover valve 23 comprising a piston 25 adapted to connect the pipe 22 either through a pipe 21 to the starting-air pipe 3 or through a vent 26 to the atmosphere. The stem of the starting-air admission valve is provided with a balancing piston 13, a piston 15, and a closing-spring 16. The space above the piston 15 is connected by a pipe 17 to a valve 19 actuated by cams on an axially movable shaft 32 and adapted to connect the pipe 17 either through a pipe 20 to the starting-air pipe 3 or to the atmosphere. For starting ahead or astern, the cut-off valve 2 is opened, the cam-shaft 32 is moved by a reversing-handle and rod 35 to bring the cam 30 or 29 into actuating position, and the changeover valve 23 is moved upwards by a regulating-handle to connect the pipe 22 to the atmosphere, releasing the 'pressure above the piston 6, so that starting-air pressure below the piston closes valve 9 and opens valve 8. Starting- air pressure in the pipe 20 lifts the piston 19 into position for actuation bythe cam 30 or 29, so that starting-air acts through pipe 17 on piston 15 to actuate the admission valve 12. To change over to normal running, movement of the regulating handle to start fuel injection moves the change-over valve 23 into a position connecting-the pipes 21, 22, so that air pressure above the piston 6 closes the valve 8, and the cut-off valve 2 is then closed. To work with supercharging air, the cam-shaft 32 is shifted to bring cam 31 into position and supercharge air is supplied through pipe 40' and valve 9 to the admission valve 12. On opening the cutoff valve 2, the pressure of the starting-air in pipes 3, 20, 17 will actuate the valve 12, under control of the cam 31, to admit supercharging air to the engine cylinder. In a modification, Fig. 2, the valve 12 is actuated mechanically through a cam-actuated rocker 44 when working with supercharging air. An additional piston 46 on the stem of the valve 12 is movable in a cylinder 47 connected by a ball joint 45 to the rocker 44. A spring 48 keeps the piston 46 normally at the lower end of the cylinder 47. At starting, a bore 49 in the valve stem admits high-pressure starting-air beneath the piston 46 to compress the spring 48 and withdraw the valve tappet from its actuating cam.
