Alternating-current induction machines; coils and conductors; machines for special mechanical purposes.-The stator conductors a, a , &c., Fig. 1, of a three-phase induction motor, which is supplied with currents of low voltage, are reduced to the minimum necessary for given pole-numbers, and are either uninsulated from the surrounding iron or are protected by a very light insulating-covering of refractory material e, such as enamel or mica. Thus, for a twopole stator; three thick conductors only are used, six conductors .being used for a four-pole stator, and so on. The conductors are connected at one side to three-phase leads A, B, C, and at the other side to a ring forming a common star connexion. The stator laminae may be in the form of sections, which are built up so that their ends do not meet, whereby leakage of currents between the conductors is prevented or reduced. The stator conductors may be supplied with currents of suitable voltage through a transformer, which may be mounted at the end or on the top of the machine. The invention is particularly applicable to machines in which liquid is allowed to circulate in the stator casing, and the conductors may be tubular and allow the liquid to pass through them. The machines are applicable for use under water, for example in combination with a pump in salvage work; the casing of the transformer in this case is preferably filled with bitumen, wax, &c.

The water-jacket formed by the annular ribs c, d is divided into a number of compartments by transverse ribs e having openings at alternate ends whereby the axial direction of flow of the liquid is continually reversed as it flows in the succeeding compartments. The liquid is admitted into the lowermost compartment f from a passage n by means of an adjustable screw p and flows circumferentially and axially up to the topmost compartment g, the walls of which have perforations m. The passage n may communicate with an annular groove r into which liquid may enter from the driven pump, and the other end of the passage n may lead to a chamber u communicating with the bearing, a filter v being interposed.

Actuating by electric motors; strainers.-In arrangements for drawing a portion of liquid from the main discharge of a pump for some subsidiary purpose, for example, for cooling and lubricating a submersible electric motor driving the pump, a filter or strainer is provided having its surface parallel to the direction of the main flow of the liquid. The main discharge a is provided with an outer settling - chamber g and a strainer h formed of a metal cylinder provided with a series of saw cuts l. The liquid in the chamber g passes through a series of holes f into the overflow chamber d, whence it passes through the passage e into the interior of the motor &c. The passage of the main body of water past the screen h keeps the strainer clean. Any matter which passes the filter is intercepted and deposited in the chamber g, whence it may be removed, inspection covers being provided for that purpose.
