    • In a security system, a method and apparatus for two-way frequency hopping communications between the control panel and each peripheral device which maintains channel synchronization through the assignment of fixed beacon frequencies for the transmission of synchronizing data. The use of frequency hopping provides high immunity to jamming and interference, reduced occurrence of multi-path phenomena, and allows for transmissions at a much higher output power than conventional fixed-frequency communications, to thus increase the effective range of the peripheral devices while providing effective and reliable two-way communications between the control panel and the peripheral devices. The invention also provides a large number of channels, which allows for actuators such as sirens, strobes and line seizing devices to be wireless in addition to sensors. The invention provides a high immunity to signal jamming, interference from other wireless systems and miss-detection due to multi-path phenomena; reduces opportunities for collision between peripheral transmissions; and eliminates the redundant emission of peripheral transmissions to reduce RF traffic in the vicinity of the system and extend the life of batteries used in the peripheral devices.

    • A wireless security alarm system providing reliable two-way communication between a control unit and a plurality of peripheral devices, including sensors, alarm indicators and remote controls. The system of the invention provides a large number of channels for monitoring both intrusion and environmental conditions, and can include emergency dialing capabilities for the elderly or small children. A monitoring service can monitor the premises, and upon detecting an alarm condition to process audio and/or video data allowing the monitoring service to watch and/or listen to events occuring within the premises and dispatch an appropriate emergency response, and to communicate with persons within the premises during an emergency. The peripherals used in system of the invention can be configured through the control unit and automatically or remotely reconfigured if the control unit detects attempts to tamper with peripherals or jam the signals to the control unit. The system may be programmed by connection to a local or remote personal computer. To reduce the incidence of false alarms in response to an indication of an alarm condition by a sensor the main control unit may request a status signal from the sensor, and/or from one or more neighboring sensors, to verify the alarm condition. A cordless telephone handset may function as a remote control device for the system, wherein an LCD displays system status and other desired indicators, and the telephone keypad is used for data entry and activation or deactivation of the alarm system. A cellular, pager or two-way radio connection backup may be provided in case of sabotage or failure of the telephone line, or used as the primary communications line.

    • A digital video security system comprises a video module (60) and an event scheduling module (22) for generating signals in response to at least one predefined event, such that the video module renders the video images in response to a signal generated by the event scheduling module. Predefined events include triggering events, such as motion detection, or a scheduled events, such as a preset date and time. Video images are recorded in a time-indexed file format, from which segments of footage may be extracted by reference to a database of time indices relating to the predefined events. Video images taken by the security system may be delivered in near real-time or at a later time using streaming technology. The security system is operable by either a host computer (20) provided with a video camera (60) or a remote computer (120), which are in communication over a network such as the Internet.
