    • A triangulation system including a laser beam, optics focusing the laser beam on an object, a light detection unit detecting light reflected from the object due to impingement of the beam on the object, and an arrangement for determining, based on the detected light, object feature dimensions. The wavelength of the laser beam may be shorter than of infrared radiation, which allows for a reduced spot size without significant loss of depth of field. So as to reduce aberrations or a sensitivity to aberrations due to the shortened wavelength, the system may include (i) a polarization dependent coating matching the index of refraction of an element of the light detection unit to that of air for a range of angles, (ii) tilted projection optics, (iii) a prism wavefront corrector, and/or (iv) a positioning assembly, which provides for increased precision in positioning the laser diode with respect to a collimator lens.

    • An inspection system (10) is used to obtain three-dimensional information pertaining to an article (12) having elements with specular surfaces, such as the solder balls on a BGA device. The system includes patterned light projector (20) which projects a pattern at an oblique angle ( alpha ) with respect to the plane of the article (12) and an image detector (24) disposed generally above the article (12). The light projector (20) includes an extended light source (30) and a light patterning member (32) disposed such that the light pattern is in focus in an image plane parallel to the plane of the article (12), satisfying the Scheimpflug condition. The spacing of the lines is preferably greater than a spacing or pitch of the specular elements. An image processor (26) is coupled to the image detector (24) to receive the image and measure the lateral shift of the lines to determine height information using triangulation.

    • For detecting the presence of a substance such as ice or snow on a surface such as the wing of an aircraft, light is emitted from an unpolarized source (13). The unpolarized light passes through a linear polarizer (11) which has a vertical polarization axis. The vertically polarized light passes through a quarter wave retarder plate (12), which changes the linearly polarized light into circularly polarized light. The quarter wave retarder plate (12) has its slow and fast axes both at 45 degrees relative to the vertical axis of the linear polarizer (11). A specular surface (14) reflects the incident circularly polarized light back along path (23). If surface (14) is ice-free, the reflected light will result in an image viewed by the eye (26) alternating between dark and bright, respectively. Any ice or snow covering a portion of surface (14) will cause that portion of the image to maintain the same brightness.
