    • This disclosure sets forth a variable tensioning system for use in a valve featuring shear seals. In the preferred and illustrated embodiment, a spring system provides loading on the valve element (18) to force that element into engagement with a valve seat (14). A sliding sealing surface is accomplished in this contact. The valve element (18) may be a tapered plug, a sphere or a flat face or plate. Typically, it is a hard member working against a seat (14) supporting a seal surface featuring a sliding shear seal. A specific minimum load is applied to the valve element (18) to accomplish sealing against minimum pressure. The present apparatus incorporates a closed chamber (24) enclosing a slideable piston (31). The piston (31) has a specific cross-­sectional area exposed to fluid pressure of the fluid being controlled by the valve. The piston (31) applies pressure dependent force against the valve element (18). This adds to the force applied to the valve element (18) by a spring means (30), the two forces controllably adding to assure that the seal is sufficiently loaded to perfect a seal up to a specified maximum pressure.

    • In a valveless positive displacement pump a piston 40 is rotated by a motor 12 and shaft 104 within a cylindrical housing 22 having a closed end. A cam arrangement 16 introduces reciprocating motion into shaft 104 as it rotates, with a dwell period between compression and suction strokes. The piston surface includes a fluid passage which extends to the end of the piston and which includes two intersecting helical slots. As the piston reciprocates (suction/compression) and rotates, the fluid passage is maintained in fluid coupling with an inlet/outlet port by a respective said helical slot, and during the subsequent dwell period the fluid coupling is transferred between the two ports via an intermediate state where both ports are sealed by the piston surface.
