    • A method for making an image of an object including depth information comprising the steps of: illuminating the object with a periodic pattern of light from an illuminating arrangement; the illuminating arrangement being such that the pattern is in focus in a focal plane and defocuses progressively away from said focal plane; the object being placed such that different parts of it are at different distances from the focal plane; capturing image data from the thus-illuminated object; analysing the captured image data to extract depth information based on the extent of defocussing of the pattern; and displaying an image of the object without the pattern and with depth information. Apparatus or carrying out the method, comprising an illuminating arrangement adapted to illuminate the object with a periodic pattern of light; the illuminating arrangement being such that the pattern is in focus in a focal plane and defocuses progressively away from said focal plane; the object being locatable with respect to the illuminating arrangement such that different parts of it are at different distances from the focal plane; image data capturing means adapted to capture image data from the thus illuminated object; data analysis means adapted to analyse captured image data to extract depth information based on the extent of defocussing of the pattern; and image display means for displaying an image of the object without the pattern and with depth information.

    • A method and apparatus are disclosed for creating a three dimensional virtual object/computer interface, by: displaying an image of an interface on a display device; imaging an object in an object space; defining a plurality of depth zones within said object space, at depths corresponding to actuatable artefacts of the interface; detecting when the object intersects one of said depth zones at a location coincident with an artefact at that depth; and effecting an action corresponding to the intersection so detected. A projection slide is also disclosed which has multiple slide image planes, e.g. on front and back faces and perhaps intermediate front and back faces, as by assembling more than one slide. The images can be patterns that, when projected, will focus at different distances from the slide, and this can be used for depth discrimination when an object scene is illuminated with light through the slide. The depth discrimination can be used to add 3D realism to computer games such as the Eye Toy game, as by comprising the means for defining a plurality of depth zones in a virtual interface.

    • A method for guiding a visually impaired person to a specific location comprises comparing a real-time image 12 of a location captured by a user-carried device with a stored image 11 of the location. The real-time image is processed to identify salient features thereof 14b, 15b, matching the salient features to features 14a, 15a in the stored image 11, and providing an output to the user indicative of the user's location relative to the salient features. The location of the device may initially be identified via GPS, and this data may be used to select an appropriate stored image. A bank of stored images relating to a specific location or building may be accessed by the device via a local area network. The device may also provide obstacle detection to detect obstacles that are not present in the stored image. An apparatus 13 for carrying out the method comprising a mobile phone or tablet appropriately equipped e.g. with a tactile map and/or audiovisual guidance provision is also disclosed.
