    • 19,508. Smith, F. S., and Smith, J. H., [trading as Smith & Sons, J.]. Sept. 10. Carillon mechanism.-Each bell is operated by a separate wheel 1, Fig. 1, bearing studs 6 to trip a pair of bell cranks 7, which are connected to two hammers by cords 10, the object of having two hammers being to permit of quickly-repeated strokes. Each such wheel, being subject to a separate driving-weight 5 on an endless chain 36, is geared to a pinion 11 which bears a cross-arm 13 engaged by a bell-crank detent 14, Figs. 1 and 4, with escape-pallets 15, 16. The bell-crank detents are connected by cords 20 to levers 19 over a music barrel 18, which is in a train with its own driving-weight 23 and acts when a detent is disengaged. The half-revolutions thus allowed to any pinion and cross-arm correspond to single hammer-strokes. The levers 19 may be used as keys independently of the music barrel, or may be operated by electromagnets 45 in circuit with keys. Worms 32 for winding-up each weight are geared to separate clutches 27 on a common shaft 25, which is driven by an electric or hydraulic motor when the music barrel runs. Pallets 38, 39 at the top and bottom of the weights put the clutches into and out of gear by acting on tumbler levers 40 which are linked to bell-crank levers 42. The weights are split so as to allow the use of shorter chains than would otherwise be necessary.
