    • A method and apparatus for producing X-ray image of a patient's teeth (21) by placing an intra-oral sensor (23) having a plurality of pixels (25) disposed in a linear array inside the patient's mouth, and moving a radiation source (11) around outside of the patient's mouth. The intra-oral sensor (23) detects the radiation that has passed through the patient's teeth (21) and generates corresponding output signals that depend on the amount of radiation arriving at each pixel (25). The information contained in the output signals is stored and can be used to create an X-ray image of the patient's teeth. The intra-oral sensor can be moved about inside the patient's mouth in coordination with the movement of the radiation source in order to improve the resulting image quality. This method and apparatus can be used to obtain an X-ray image of any number of teeth, including a panoramic image of all of the patient's teeth (21), in a single, quick, uninterrupted operation.

    • The invention generally relates to barrier film applications that cover the diaphragm (head) of a stethoscope and/or barrier film dispensers for dispensing the barrier film applications. The barrier film applications and/or barrier film dispenser can be used to prevent the spread of infection which may otherwise result from the same stethoscope being used from patient to patient in a hospital and/or clinical environment. Further, the barrier film dispenser and/or a barrier film cartridge housed in the barrier film dispenser can contain multiple barrier film applications sufficiently or substantially preventing them from contamination and/or making application fast and easy. By way of example, prior to each patient exam, a health care worker can apply a new sheet of barrier film application to the diaphragm of a stethoscope, thereby substantially reducing the chance of passing on an infection or other sources of disease from one patient to another.

    • An apparatus(100) and method for fabricating fiber gratings from optical fibers(114) by imposing constant or variable chiral refractive index modulation along an optical fiber. The refractive index modulation may be of single helix symmetry or of double helix symmetry. In several embodiments of the present invention the refractive index modulation is imposed by twisting and moving a specially prepared optical fiber through a heater(116) that heats a small region of the fiber to a temperature sufficient to allow the fiber to twist in that region as it moves through the heater. Alternately, a normal optical fiber may specially prepared for u se with the apparatus of the present invention at a pre-process stage prior to twisting and heating. In other embodiments of the inventive apparatus, the refractive index modulation is imposed by cutting one or more helical groove patterns into a normal optical fiber, or wrapping a normal fiber with one or more elongated dielectric fibers of a smaller diameter than the optical fiber in one or more helical patterns. Advantageously, the fabrication of the chiral fiber grating may be monitored and the fabrication parameters automatically adjusted to ensure that the chiral fiber grating meets desired requirements.

    • There is disclosed a process for distributing lower-cost prescription-bas ed pharmaceutical or medical device products for United States resident consume rs or patients while complying with governmental pharmaceutical and device regulatory requirements. More specifically, there is disclosed a process for locating a United States regulated pharmacy physically outside of the United States in a free trade zone type environment such as a Canadian economic development corporation (e.g., Province of British Columbia), physical free trade zone (e.g., Mirabel airport outside of Montreal) of nati ve peoples reservation (e.g., Indian reservation). The inventive pharmacy fulfillment center will fill prescriptions for U.S. citizens and residents with valid prescription- regulated medical products (e.g., pharmaceutical products, biological products and medical devices) obtained from non-U.S. distributors but sourced from the same manufacturers who distribute to U.S. distributors. The products will add U.S. approved labeling information or a derivative of such information and the pharmacy will fill prescriptions with a maximum allowable supply (where appropriate and according to prescription information) to U.S. residents according to the prescription information, all without running afoul of U.S. laws andregu lations of the Food and Drug Administration and respective state pharmacy boards.
