摘要： A process for isolating microorganisms from samples, particularly Shigella spp. from food samples, and a system, apparatus and composition therefor are provided. Magnetic particles are used to capture microorganisms and a system having separate magnetically-based apparatuses for collecting, concentrating and retrieving is used to isolate the magnetic particles having bound microorganisms. The apparatus for concentrating magnetic particles utilizes a small magnet assisted by vibration to concentrate collected particles at a localized region on the bottom of a container. The process, system and apparatus of the present invention are simple and inexpensive providing improved magnetic particle recovery adaptable to large scales.

摘要： Relative Humidity or Water Activity Apparatus Anthony Nelson Sharpe, 230 Christian St. Almonte, Ontario K0A lA0, Canada An apparatus for measuring relative humidity or the water activity level in a food sample, within defined limits, gives a reading within seconds. The apparatus comprises a rough or porous display surface to which is applied a pattern of graded indicator substances, each of which deliquesces at a known relative humidity. Said indicator substances are applied in such quantity that they are invisible or nearly so when dry, but become severally or wholly visible again on exposure to a moist atmosphere, according to the relative humidity of the atmosphere in relation to the range of relative humidities covered by said deliquescent indicators. If said indicators are applied in the form of the decimal fractions corresponding to their relative humidity values the apparatus provides a digital readout of relative humidity, directly and without electronics. In a modification the display surface is of glass treated with dichlorodimethylsilane after the indicators have been applied. In another the display surface is a thin porous polymer film. In further modifications the display is enclosed in a shallow dish which may be applied to the surface of a food, or in a spearlike container which may be plunged inside a food. In a final modification the deliquescent indicators are mixed with a dye which diffuses into a removable porous layer to provide a permanent record of the humidity or water activity.

摘要： Improvement in Apparatus for Filtration (Anthony N. Sharpe, PO Box 1224, Almonte, Ont. KOA lAO, Canada) When filtering fluids the filter means and the receptacles for fluid before and after filtration are commonly individual and must be assembled together in order to perform filtration. The individual items are also commonly rigid, bulky, and require cleaning for re-use. My invention provides a disposable filtration apparatus constructed from a filter means and flexible impermeable film, joined together in such manner as to form fluid receptacles connected internally by the filter. Being preformed, the apparatus requires no assembly by the user. Moreover, by lying flat it occupies negligible space before use and can be dispensed from a roll or stack, yet being flexible it dilates or contracts to accept the sample to be filtered and accomodates the movement of fluid during filtration. One embodiment of the invention employs a filter means capable of retaining undesirable microorganisms and a drinking tube which allows the user to enjoy microbiologically pure water. Chemical or biochemical test reagents may be incorporated into the apparatus so that simple tests requiring filtration and addition of test reagents can be performed automatically. SPECIFICATION The invention is concerned with apparatus for filtration of fluids and of carrying out chemical or biochemical analyses requiring prior filtration of fluids. In one of the commonest laboratory techniques a suspension of solid particles in liquid is separated out by filtration. In its simplest form the filtration is brought about by folding a disk of filter paper into a cone, fitting the cone into a rigid conical filter funnel and inserting this in a flask which is the receiver for the filtrate. More complex apparatus may require elaborately constructed filter means, filter supports, vacuum or pressure pumps and valves. After filtration is complete the apparatus is normally readied for re-use by disassembling it and washing or sterilizing
