    • An enteral fluid delivery system (1) is disclosed having a fluid container (2) with a pierceable seal (10) covering an opening to the container (2). A connection component (6) connects an administration set (4) to the fluid container (2). The connection component (6) includes a hollow tube (48, 132) that is connected to the administration set (4) at one end and has a spike (50, 130) at the other end. During storage and transportation, spike (50, 130) is aligned with and positioned slightly away from the seal (10). In use, spike (50, 130) is linearly movable to pierce the seal (10) thereby communicating the fluid in the container (2) through the tube (48, 132) to the administration set (4). Spike (50, 130) is prevented from inadvertently moving to pierce the seal (10) by retaining means. The retaining means may be selectively disengaged thereby allowing the spike (50, 130) to move to pierce the seal (10). In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the fluid container (2) and the administration set (4) are provided together in a set with the container (2) prefilled with fluid and the connection component (6) connecting the container (2) and the administration set (4) with the spike (50, 130) retained in position aligned with and positioned slightly away from seal (10).

    • The invention relates transiently attaching drag-tags to molecules during electrophoresis. The invention includes running buffers having drag-tags that transiently attach to lipophilic moieties attached to the molecules. The lipophilic moieties can be covalently or ionically bonded to the molecules. One particular aspect of the invention is a nucleoside analog or a nucleic acid analog comprising a lipophilic moiety. The invention is also directed to methods of separating molecules that comprise a lipophilic moiety. The methods generally comprise transiently attaching a drag-tag to the lipophilic moiety during a separation modality. These methods can be used to separate the molecules by size or weight, to measure a hydrodynamic radius of a drag-tag, or to separate a plurality of drag-tag by their hydrodynamic radius.

    • The invention is a system (10, 110) for regulating volume in a retention cuff/balloon (20) in an indwelling catheter; i.e. , the combination of fixed-volume inflatable retention cuff mountable on a patient proximal end of an indwelling catheter (14) and relief valve (23, 123) connected to the cuff. The relief valve has ends for selective introduction of fluid to the cuff and for connection to an inflation tube. A valve port (24, 124) permits escape of excess fluid when a maximum cuff volume has been exceeded, and inflation tube (22) connects cuff (20) to the relief valve. The inflation tube has ends in fluid-tight connection to an interior of the cuff, and the relief valve to thereby permit the cuff and valve to be in fluid communication with each other for selective filling of the cuff to insert and safely retain an indwelling catheter in a patient for an extended period.
