    • In a projection display device, a polarization converting element is provided between an imager and a refracting optical system for converting a polarization direction of light after modulation into a direction radially extending from the center of the optical axis of the refracting optical system. Light transmitted through the polarization converting element is incident onto the refracting optical system in a state of P-polarized light or a state close to the state of P-polarized light. Thereby, the transmittance of light through the refracting optical system is made substantially uniform and increased.

    • An imager is shifted with respect to an optical axis of a refractive optical system. Thereby, a throw distance of a projector is shortened. A wavelength-selective half wavelength plate for rotating a polarization direction of green light beams is disposed between a dichroic prism and the refractive optical system in such a manner that the polarization direction of the green light beams is in parallel to the shifting direction. Thereby, the green light beams are incident onto the refractive optical system as P-polarized beams, whereby a transmittance of the green light beams in the refractive optical system is increased, while suppressing lowering of the light amount of the green light beams, and color non-uniformity resulting from lowering of the light amount of the green light beams.

    • A projection display device includes: an optical engine that emits image light in a direction parallel to a projection plane; a first reflective optical system that reflects the image light in a first direction away from the projection plane; a second reflective optical system that reflects the image light reflected by the first reflective optical system in a second direction away from the optical engine and closer to the projection plane; and a refractive optical system. The refractive optical system is divided into a first refractive optical system interposed between the optical engine and first reflective optical system, and second refractive optical system interposed between the first and second reflective optical system. The optical engine is arranged so that a mounting plane of optical components is almost perpendicular to a plane parallel to both of the first and second directions and is almost parallel to the projection plane.
