    • To automatically adjust a position of a headrest accurately by preventing an unnecessary movement of the headrest, a headrest position adjusting device includes a sensing electrode 1 and a detecting circuit 2 embedded in a headrest 13 provided on a seat 10, an arithmetic circuit 5, a headrest driving motor 3, and a motor control circuit 4. The arithmetic circuit 5 calculates the distance between the head 22 of an occupant 21 and the headrest 13 and an amount of change of a capacitance based on a capacitance value from the detecting circuit 2. The motor control circuit 4 controls the headrest driving motor 3 in accordance with the calculation results to adjust the position of the headrest 13. When a vehicle signal from a vehicle signal output unit 6 is a specific signal or when the amount of change of the capacitance per a predetermined time is larger than a certain threshold, the arithmetic circuit 5 outputs to the motor control circuit 4 a calculation result for suspending the position adjusting operation for the headrest 13.

    • To measure the distance between a sensing target and sensors accurately by suppressing differences in amount of change in outputs from sensors and differences in initial capacitances thereof and detect the sensing target highly accurately, capacitance-type sensor includes: sensor electrodes configuring a sensor electrode group; and a pair of guard electrodes. The sensor electrodes are driven being supplied with a sensor potential or a guard potential, and the guard electrodes are driven being supplied with the guard potential. Even when the outermost sensor electrode of the sensor electrode group is activated, the amount of change in the outputs from the sensor electrodes configuring the sensor electrode group and their capacitance values can be made substantially uniform because the guard electrodes are driven at the guard potential.
