    • A shut-off valve, particularly for use in a pipeline for conveying gases, includes a valve casing, a valve member mounted for movement between a valve open position and a valve closed position, and a casing seal mounted on at least one of the valve casing and the valve member for forming a seal with a sealing surface at least when the valve member is in the valve closed position. The casing seal includes a frame member having two legs extending in a direction toward the position of the sealing surface when the seal is formed. The two legs are spaced and define therebetween an open channel. The casing seal further includes a seal member formed from a substantially flat elastic strip which is deformed to include two leg portions which are positioned between and freely and elastically urged toward respective inner surfaces of the legs of the frame member and a bent portion which connects the two leg portions and which projects outwardly of the channel for sealing contact with the sealing surface.

    • A plurality of regenerative hot blast stoves are operated under a staggered-parallel process wherein each stove is alternately operated under a fixed heating cycle wherein no cold blast is supplied to the stove and no hot blast issues therefrom and a fixed blasting cycle wherein cold blast is supplied to the stove and issues therefrom as hot blast. The initiation of the cycles of the stoves is staggered in time with respect to each other such that at any given time hot blast issues from more than one of the stoves but at different temperatures. The temperature of the hot blast issuing from the stoves is regulated to a predetermined temperature required at the blast furnace in a two-stage operation including a first stage wherein relatively cooler and warmer hot blast issuing from those stoves operating under blasting is mixed and controlled as a function of a first reference temperature greater than the temperature required at the blast furnace, and a second stage wherein cold blast is admixed with the hot blast mixture and controlled as a function of a second reference temperature equal to the temperature required at the blast furnace. Upon a lowering of the second reference temperature due to an operating requirement of the blast furnace, the first reference temperature is raised, whereby the second stage temperature regulation overlaps the first stage temperature regulation.

    • In an aircraft terrain warning system utilizing a radar altimeter wherein the rate of closure to the terrain is compared with the aircraft's altitude above the terrain to generate a warning signal when the closure rate is excessive for a particular altitude, the closure rate signal is limited and biased depending upon the aircraft's closure rate and configuration in order to significantly increase the time response of the system while at the same time reducing nuisance warnings. The amplitude limit on the closure rate signal, is varied, above a predefined altitude, as a function of the closure rate signal in oreder to provide increased warning times at greater closure rates. Circuitry, responsive to the aircraft's flap positions, is also provided to alter the characteristics of rate limiter so as to provide warning parameters that more accurately reflect operating conditions at lower aircraft speeds.
