    • 559,818. Artificial filaments. McLEAN, A., SWIFT, S. R., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Sept. 2, 1942, No. 12377. [Class 2 (ii)] A solution of a protein, e.g. casein or a vegetable globulin, is extruded into a coagulating medium, and the filaments so produced are washed in a solution containing an anti-swelling agent for the protein, then treated with a solution containing an anti-swelling agent together with urea, thiourea, biuret, or like bifunctional amide, and thereafter are treated under acid conditions, and while they are still impregnated with the amide solution, with a hardening aldehyde capable of reacting with the amide in the presence of acid to produce an insoluble condensation product. The antiswelling agent may be a concentrated salt solution, or a strong solution of alcohol, glycerol, or other organic dehydrating agent. Preferably a saturated sodium chloride solution is used. Sodium sulphate or other inorganic salt solutions, e.g. alkaline earth, metal halide solutions may be used. The aldehyde may be formaldehyde, a formaldehyde polymer, or acrolein. In an example, staple fibres are obtained by a continuous process from a solution of ground nut protein by extruding the alkaline solution into an aqueous sodium sulphate solution acidified with sulphuric acid, stretching the filaments as they are produced, subjecting the advancing coagulated filaments, while their length is maintained, to washing in concentrated sodium chloride solution, and then cutting the filaments into staple fibres. The fibres are placed in a solution containing urea and salt and allowed to steep for several hours. The fibres are removed and most of the adhering liquor is drained off. They are then immersed in a warm solution of sodium chloride, formaldehyde and hydrochloric acid, for several hours. The fibres are then removed, washed, and dried. Specification 543,586 is referred to.
