    • In a heat exchange process for multi-stage cooling and heating of first and second liquids respectively, the first liquid is cooled by evaporating a volatile fluid in direct thermal contact therewith, the second liquid is heated by condensation of the evaporated vapour, and the condensed fluid is separated from the second liquid in the heating stages and returned to the cooling stages. The process may be applied to the purification of sea water (see Group XIII) or, as shown, to the separation of nitrate from aqueous solution. Crude deposits including sodium nitrate are mixed with mother liquor and heated in condensers 64-66 so as to form a concentrated solution. Undissolved deposits are removed in saturator and separator 67 and the solution is then cooled in evaporators 61-63, causing the sodium nitrate to crystallize out. The crystallized nitrate is removed in separator 68 and the mother liquor is recirculated to the first condenser 64. The invention can be applied to concentration of other aqueous solutions, e.g. copper sulphate solutions. Specification 806,727 is referred to.

    • A system allowing either right or left-side (ambidextrous) ejection of a shell from a weapon is provided. The system may comprise a bolt receiver having left and right-side ejection ports; a firing bolt assembly having left and right-side alignment slots and an extractor claw; and a relocatable ejection port cover assembly disposed alternatively in either the right or left-side ejection port to eject a shell from the opposite open ejection port. The ejection ports and the cover assembly may be formed having bilateral symmetry to facilitate relocation of the cover assembly from one side to the other. The cover assembly comprises a mounting flange, an ejection port plug disposed within either of the ejection ports, and a rail configured for being disposed within the alignment slots and including an extended portion and a contact face that engages the shell so that it is ejected from the open ejection port.

    • An apparatus for attaching a tag and a thread length to a web of filter material with one end of the thread length secured to the tag and the other end being secured to the web adjacent one side edge of the web and the tag being attached to the web adjacent the opposite side edge. The apparatus has a gripper for drawing the tag, with the thread secured thereto, across the web from that one edge to an extended position beyond the opposite side edge before returning the tag to a final extended position over the web. The apparatus also has a mechanism for attaching the tag to the web in the final position, a displacement mechanism for the gripper means that has a first linear guide on which the gripper is slidable, and a second inner guide that is transverse to the first guide and fixedly located in the apparatus. The gripper is movable in the mutually transverse directions of the guides, both transversely across the web to the extended and final positions and longitudinally of the web away from the tag-attaching mechanism.
