A device for the attachment of a pipe to a housing comprises a tightening piece 3 having a screwed part and a shoulder 3a, a screwed connection piece 2 for engagement with the screwed part of the piece 3 and having a tapered external end face 2b and a sealing ring 4; when the device is placed in a bore of the housing the piece 2 is screwed on to the piece 3 with the ring 4 between the shoulder and face 2b so that the face 2b expands the ring to clamp the device in the bore. The pipe 9 may be connected by a cap nut 8 screwed on to the piece 2 and with the interposition of a sealing ring 6. In modifications, (a) a metallic reinforcing ring is disposed between the ring 4 and the surface 2b, and (b) the piece 2 is tightened through the intermediary of a bush screwed therein although the bush may serve only as a sealing cap. The piece 2 may be of angle form.

The individual slats 1, shown in partial cross - section, of a Venetian blind - type shutter normally hang vertically so that the lower edge (not shown) of each slat makes contact with the upper edge 3 of an adjacent slat, and the area of each slat below the pivotal axis 2 is greater than that above the axis so that air flow from a fan or blower striking the slats in the direction of the arrow 8 swings the slats to an open position. To minimize the pressure drop caused by the slats, which may be made of a plastics material, the upper portion of each slat is bent over as shown to enclose the pivot spindle 2 and a metal bar 6 to make the upper portion heavier than the lower portion so that the centre of gravity is brought to the point 7 where it exercises a small closing moment when the slat is closed and a smaller closing moment when the slat is open or horizontal. The bent-over portion may alternatively be shaped to accommodate round-section bars, or the upper part of the slat may be made wholly of metal and attached to the lower part, of plastics material, by a tongue and groove joint.
