    • A method of preparing magnesium oxychloride and/or oxysulfate cements is described which involves the control of temperature of the magnesium chloride and/or sulfate solutions and the magnesium oxide used to prepare the cements during mixing and the controlled addition of the requisite amounts of magnesium oxide, magnesium chloride and/or sulfate required to form the cements during the mixing procedure. In mixing the requisite oxides with the sulfate and/or chloride solutions used to produce the cement mixtures, the oxide is mixed and thoroughly blended with at least 80 percent of the requisite chloride and/or sulfate solution required to provide a homogeneous mixture. After achieving the initial homogeneous mixture, the balance of the chloride and/or sulfate solution required to provide the requisite chemical constituents to form an oxychloride or oxysulfate cement is added and thoroughly blended to provide a second homogeneous mixture capable of forming a magnesium oxychloride or magnesium oxysulfate cement product upon setting.

    • Dialkyl malonate/alkyl acrylate Michael addition product mixtures having at least three acceptor moieties in a substantial number of the molecules can be consistently prepared without the need for long reaction times or the use of a large excess of the acceptor when the reaction is effected by gradually adding one molar proportion of a dialkyl malonate to at least three molar proportions of an alkyl acrylate which has been preheated to 60.degree.-80.degree. C. in admixture with an initiator and a phase transfer catalyst. In a preferred embodiment, the preheated mixture is maintained at 60.degree.-80.degree. C. for at least one hour before the dialkyl malonate is added in order to increase the percentage of product composed of the heavier components.

    • Alpha-olefin oligomers are produced by oligomering alpha-olefin monomer with a catalyst system comprising boron trifluoride, a protic promoter, and a special type of modifier. The modifier is a compound that satisfies the following criteria: (a) it has at least one moiety in which a carbonyl group is directly bonded to a nitrogen atom which is in turn bonded to two separate carbon atoms, (b) it is devoid of any nitrogen atom other than a nitrogen atom that is either (i) directly bonded to two separate carbon atoms and to a carbonyl group or (ii) is triply bonded to a single carbon atom, and (c) it is devoid of any protonic functional substituent. These modifiers control the oligomer product distribution and provide higher percentages of lower oligomers, especially dimers.
