    • 12,531. Moir, E. W., and Mills, R. C. Sept. 1. Cartridge magazines.-Relates to machines for charging the magazines of machine guns of the Lewis type, which comprise a rotary drum containing a row or superposed rows of radially-arranged cartridges. The invention consists in providing the charging-machine with mechanism, acting upon the cartridges in the drum, for imparting a step-by-step movement to the drum so as properly to space the cartridges, the same mechanism being employed for placing the cartridges from a hopper into the spaces in the drum. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the drum g to be filled is mounted upon a fixed pivot f with its radial opening immediately below the mouth e of a hopper d. A lever h mounted to reciprocate on the pivot f is provided with a projection p for inserting the cartridges in the drum, and a projection q which, on the return stroke, acts on the cartridge that has been inserted to rotate the drum by an amount governed bv a spring pawl r engaging teeth on the outside of the drum. The lever h may be reciprocated by hand and, in a modification, carries the hopper d. In the example shown, the lever h is reciprocated by a crank and connecting-rod mechanism l attached to a sliding rod k and actuated by means of a handle n. Specification 6808/88 is referred to.

[Class 3 (i)] A sign facia consisting of a stencil 11, the orifices of which are occupied by transparent or translucent tubes 12 filled with transparent or translucent fluid, is backed by a continuously rotating colour filter 15. The filter is prismatic in form, with sides composed of strips, rods, or tubes, and may have re-entrant angles. One of the coloured strips forming the prism is hinged about one long edge to allow of access to the interior. A transparent or translucent plate 14 of figured or ornamental glass, &c. may be located behind the stencil 11. Lamps 20 may be mounted on the prism shaft 16, and strip lights may be placed across the prism sides. The tubes 12 may each be carried by a separate removable facia stencil plate.

[Class 136 (ii).] In a combined free and fixed wheel driving- mechanism for pedal cycles, the driving sprocketwheel A is provided with an internal spur-wheel A adapted to be engaged by a tooth D on a rocking disc D mounted, under the control of a spring S, between flanges on a driven member B secured to the wheel hub, forward drive being transmitted by the engagement of a snug D with the member B ; the disc D is adapted to be locked in this position, to produce the fixed-wheel drive, by the engagement of a pawl L with the under side of a projection D on the rocking disc D. The pawl L is actuated through a spring F from toggle links G, N, which are so acted upon by a spring Z as to spring into flexed positions on either side of the straight-line position, the link G being fixed to a spindle J carrying on the outside of the casing a cam or arm arranged between two projections on a rocking lever adapted to be operated by the rider through a spring and cable control.
