Testing lubricants.-In a machine for testing the lubricating properties of oils and greases by the motion imparted to a loose member by the friction of a well-greased driven member, rotary and reciprocating testing devices and two recording-cylinders are driven simultaneously from one shaft. In the machine shown in plan in Fig. 1, and in section on the line A B in Fig 2, the main shaft 3 rotates a spindle 1 within loose members 2, reciprocates an adjustable member within a slidable cylinder 35 by means of a shaft 31 and crank 33, and rotates the recording cylinders 52 through the shaft 31, rod 48, train 49, and spindle 51. When the oil or grease has been placed between the testing- members, the pressure of the members 2 on the spindle 1 is adjusted by a system of levers 14 through a plunger 13, spring 10, and a member 7 which is slidable in a spindle 6 and has pivoted arms 8 engaging bell-crank levers 5. The pressure is maintained by screwing-up a nut 21 and releasing the levers 14 so that the movement imparted to the members 2 is transmitted by the members 5, 7 to the spindle 6 and a case 9 against the action of a spring 26, and is recorded by a pencil 54 on a rack 53 engaged by teeth 12 on the lower part of the case. Movement of the cylinder 35 to the right is prevented by racks 42 on fixed uprights, and spring-loaded pawls 41 on bars 40 secured to the lugs 37 by which the cylinder is mounted on bars 36. Motion to the left against springs 38 is recorded by a pencil 60 secured to an arm 59 carried by a nut 58 moved along a threaded spindle 57 rotated by a gearing actuated by a rack on the lugs 37. Gas or steam may be admitted to the cylinder 35 by a pipe 43, an outlet being provided at the other end. The members 1, 2 may be replaced by corresponding members with flat surfaces in contact, and the temperature of the surfaces may be read by a thermometer 62.
