    • 508,246. Conveyers. CANNING & CO., Ltd., W., and CANNING, E. R. March 23, 1938, No. 8876. [Class 78 (i)] In electrodepositing and other apparatus for use in treating the surfaces of metal and other articles of the kind in which the articles are passed through a plurality of baths in succession by a conveyer, the track oh which the conveyer runs has movable sections which can be raised and lowered for the purpose of transferring an article from one bath to the next. Articles b to be treated are suspended from rods a which are supported at their ends by a track composed of fixed sections d and movable sections c, and are propelled by abutments g on endless chains h. Each section e, Fig. 1, is supported by a carriage n which is raised and lowered by chains s driven by an electric motor q. When a section is in the raised position, the rods are moved along it by abutments u on horizontally slidable bars v driven by a motor w. A lost motion connection 12, 13, 14 is provided between the motor w and the bars v in order that the articles may drain before the rods a are moved. Switches 3 ... 7 actuated by the moving parts are provided in order to render 'the action automatic. The switches may be replaced by hydraulic pistons arranged in closed pressure circuits through which electrical relays are actuated for controlling the motors. At the delivery end of the baths the articles are removed from the rods a which are then raised to a track 19 for return to their initial positions by the chains h. The rods are transferred from the'track 19 to the lower track by pivoted supporting members 20, Fig. 2, mounted on endless chains 21. Abutment members 23 move the members 20 into positions for receiving the rods, this movement being limited by pins 24 on the chains 21 engaging slots 25 in the members 20.

    • An automated computer-controlled method and apparatus for measuring the quality or fineness of a pigment dispersion sample, comprising placing the pigment dispersion at the deep end of the tapered path of a Hegman gage block, placing the Hegman gage block in a holder in a motorized drawdown device that draws the scraper along the length of the tapered path at an angle and to at a contact pressure and at a controlled rate, thereby creating a tapered film sample of paint whose thickness tapers from a maximum thickness of 100 micrometers to a minimum thickness of zero. An illuminator assembly illuminates the sample with a substantially collimated light source at an intensity level and the light reflected from the sample is collected by a lens onto a photodetector array in a digital camera. After a time interval the camera acquires an image of the sample. The image is digitized and stored in a memory in the computer and then a portion of the image within a region of interest corresponding to the sample in the tapered path is analyzed to detect and count pigment agglomerates that protrude above the surface of the sample.

    • The present invention is directed to a monitoring device for producing a target composition, such as an automotive paint or an architectural paint. The device includes a client computer in communication with a host computer and means for dispensing required items for making a desired amount of the target composition. The computer readable program code means in the computers identify one or more formulas associated with identification criteria of the target composition and dispense through means for dispensing the required items listed in the formula. The code means search for the required items in the various inventories, including updating the inventories if required. The device can be also used to control the inventory by shipping just in time any components required to produce target compositions, such as refinish tints used in automotive refinish paints.
