    • A surface controlled subsurface safety valve for use in a well tubing string including a valve closure member, an operator tube for opening the valve closure member, an annular piston on the operator tube responsive to control fluid pressure conducted from the well surface, and a spring biasing the operator tube to a position closing the valve. A lockout sleeve mounted in tandem with the operator tube for movement to a position in which the lockout sleeve holds the valve open. The operator tube having multiple flow paths and barriers to prevent accumulation of debris from well fluids within the safety valve. One flow path including a plurality of small ports extending through the upper portion of the operator tube. Another flow path defined in part by a reduced outside diameter portion of the operator tube near its lower end and multiple channels in the valve housing adjacent thereto.

    • Assemblies and methods are provided for selectively opening and closing a side port in a flow conductor for a well. In general, the sliding side door assembly includes a housing and a door subassembly. The housing has a generally tubular shape defining a fluid conducting interior and central axis. A side port is formed in the housing, and a ball seat is positioned in the housing adjacent the side port. The door subassembly is operatively engaged with the housing adjacent the side port and includes a translating sleeve positioned within the housing and a ball sealing member adapted to engage the ball seat of the housing. A ball port is formed through the ball sealing member. A cooperatively engaged helical track and follower member are provided for translating a driving movement along the central axis through the translating sleeve to a rotational movement of the ball sealing member about the central axis. Driving movements acting on the door subassembly can be provided by a standard shifting tool. Thus, a first driving movement acting on the door subassembly in a first axial direction along the central axis causes the translating sleeve to rotate the ball sealing member such that the ball port moves into overlapping alignment with the side port, thereby opening the side port. Similarly, a second driving movement acting on the door subassembly in a second axial direction along the central axis causes the translating sleeve to rotate the ball sealing member such that the ball port moves out of overlapping alignment with the side port, thereby closing the side port.

    • An improved coiled tubing pulling tool and methods of using the pulling tool for pulling a well tool from a well bore, relocating a well tool in the well bore and performing other similar operations. The pulling tool is basically comprised of an elongated inner mandrel having an axial fluid flow passageway therethrough adapted to be connected to a length of coiled tubing, a latching mandrel connected at the end of the inner mandrel having a fluid flow passageway therethrough and having a fishing nose thereon, a tubular piston member slidably extending over the inner mandrel which is movable by fluid pressure in a direction away from the fishing nose, a first spring disposed between the inner mandrel and the piston member for urging the piston member in a direction towards the fishing nose, a latching device disposed on the latching mandrel connected to the piston member before latching the pulling tool to a fishing neck of a well tool and a releasing system for unlatching the pulling tool when sufficient fluid pressure is applied to the pulling tool to overcome the spring and move the piston member away from the fishing nose.

    • Disclosed is a sliding sleeve valve and a selective pressure operated shifting tool engageable in the selected sleeve valve for shifting the valve sleeve between open and closed positions. The sleeve valve is connectible in a well conduit and is especially useful in highly deviated and horizontal wells. The sleeve valve has a longitudinal flow passage through, centralizers for centralizing the valve in well conduits, longitudinal flow slots on the valve body and ports connecting the flow slots and flow passage. The pressure operated shifting tool is connected to reeled tubing by a quick disconnect. The shifting tool includes an invertible shifting module which may be inverted to shift the valve sleeve to closed or open position. The shifting tool keys are locked retracted for running and on complete shifting of the sleeve are automatically released from the valve sleeve and returned to locked retracted position for retrieving. Complete shifting of the sleeve is signaled by circulation down reeled tubing back to surface. The shifting tool also includes a section which may be operated to retract and release the shifting tool keys from the valve sleeve if the sleeve is not completely shifted.

    • A sliding sleeve valve useful in a flow conduit to control and vary area of openings open for flow through the valve. The valve has a sleeve having a through flow passage and the sleeve is moveable between open, intermediate and closed positions. When the sleeve is in open position, the area open for flow through the valve is equal to area through the sleeve flow passage. As the sleeve is moved from open position to intermediate positions toward closed position, the area open for flow at each position is reduced to no area open for flow at closed position and conversely. Also disclosed is a pressure operated shifting tool which when lowered into the sleeve valve selectively locates in the valve, engages the sleeve, moves the sleeve upwardly or downwardly between positions and automatically disengages from the sleeve for retrieval. The invertible shifting module in the shifting tool is provided with a positioning sleeve which determines the distance the sleeve is moved when the shifting tool is operated. The shifting tool also includes structure for disengaging the sleeve valve if the shifting tool cannot move the sleeve or does not automatically disengage after operation and an emergency disconnect which may be operated to disconnect the flow conduit used to lower the shifting tool.
