    • 327,677. British United Shoe Machinery Co., Ltd., Elliott, H. E., and Brough, R. Dec. 4, 1928. Sole blanks, machines for.-Relates to machines for making location marks on a face of a sole, especially for indicating to an operator the points along the margin where a sole bevelling operation should begin and end, and comprises work gauges and opposed marking and presser means. A unitary adjustment sets the gauges for size of sole, supplementary adjustments being provided for alteration in style. An eccentric 3 on a shaft driven through a one-revolution clutch oscillates one end of a beam 5 pivoted at 6 and carrying at its free end pressing devices comprising pressers 7 each backed by a spring 13 abutting against a screwed sleeve 10 through which passes the stem 9 of the presser, adjusting and lock nuts being provided. A heel end gauge 29 is adjustable longitudinally of a slide 27 secured to a bracket 28 threaded to engage a screw 17 provided with a hand-wheel 18. A reduced part of the screw 17 engages a bracket 16 secured to a marking slide 15 carrying marking ridges 20 and work-centering arms 21 geared together and spring-pressed inwardly. Each arm carries a flat spring 25 at the end of which is a block 26 positioned above the ridge 20 to be engaged by the presser as this descends. For marking the fore end of the sole, a bar 34, pivoted centrally and formed with marking ridges 25, is connected by a link 37 with a plunger 38 backed by a spring and adjusted by a thumb nut 40, a handle 36 on the free end of the bar enabling this to be pushed over dead centre to snap into position for the reverse sole, when rights and lefts are dealt with alternately. Side gauges 42 are mounted on transverse rods 44, 45 formed with rack teeth gearing with a pinion 47 on a fixed pivot. These gauges are adjusted in unison by a head 49 on a. screwed rod 48 engaging a block 50 an extension of which engages an inclined groove 52 in a plate secured to the bracket 28, so that the side gauges are automatically adjusted to correspond with the size adjustment of the heel gauge. The screw threads on the rod 17 and the incline of the groove 52 are such that one revolution of the head 18 moves the heel end gauge one-sixth of an inch, the markers 20 one-eighth of an inch, and the side gauges one-twelfth of an inch. The bracket 28 carries a pointer 54 to indicate, the size to which the gauges are set. A guard 55 is provided to prevent the operator's fingers being placed beneath the plungers. One of the segments 23 carrying the centering arms 21 has an inclined face engaging an adjusting screw to limit the inward movement of the arms, so that a sole pushed between the arms can force them apart. The sole is inserted flesh side down with its inside edge touching the adjacent gauge 42. The preseers 7 may each be duplicated, to provide one for each side of the sole. The marking ridges may be higher at their outer ends than at their inner ends to make the indentation deeper at the edge of the sole, or the pressers may be concave for the same purpose. The presser heads may be self-adjusting to the sole surface.

    • 373,780. Boot lasts and trees. LOTUS, Ltd. and BROUGH, R., 193, Sandon Road, Stafford. May 21, 1931, No. 15080. [Classes 17 (i) and 17 (iii).] A last or tree comprises a wedge-shaped forward part 6 which together with two side portions 10, 11, slidably connected to it by pin- and-slot connections, completes the shape of the forepart of the last or tree, and a heel-part 7 which is extensibly connected to the part 6 by a rod 20. When the parts 6, 7, are fully extended, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, they are locked together by a pin 27 engaging a recess in a spring catch 23 pivoted to the rod 20. To apply the tree to a shoe, the catch 23 is depressed, allowing the parts 6, 7 to be moved nearer one another, while the portions 10, 11, are also extended, as shown in Fig. 5. The tree is inserted into the shoe and the parts 6, 7 forced apart to bring the side portions 10, 11 into their operative positions, as shown in Fig. 2. The upper surfaces of the forward and rear parts are provided with apertures 30 which may support the last during manufacture.

    • 240,059. Lotus, Ltd., and Brough, R. Feb. 6, 1925. Connecting uppers to insoles and soles.-In the manufacture of boots and shoes having an insole and a crepe rubber outsole enclosed by a band, the band is made of rubber or similar material, the inner edge being secured by sewing and the outer portion cemented so as to lie flush with the edge or to extend beneath the bottom surface of the sole. In the case of a boot or shoe, Fig. 1, having a layer E of the material known under the registered Trade Mark " Fibrok," the band F has its upper edge sewn in round a bottom filling C so as to surround the laver of " Fibrok." A crepe sole D is then fixed in position and the rubber band turned down and cemented to its edge. In some cases, a middle sole of leather or other suitable material may replace the " Fibrok " layer. In a turn shoe, Fig. 4, the band F is inserted between the lower edge of the upper A and an insole B and is extended under the crepe sole D. Reference has been directed by the Comp troller to Specification 240,187.

    • An optical viewing assembly and system for transferring image information from one image modifying device to another image modifying device. The optical viewing assembly includes a first image modifying device connected to a second image modifying device through a quick-release clamping arrangement. The clamping arrangement includes first and second clamping portions integrally formed at opposite ends of a hollow sleeve. Each clamping portion has a split collar that is adapted to receive one of the image modifying devices. Each collar includes a pair of clamping legs that are separated from the sleeve by a slot that extends at least part way around a perimeter of the sleeve to thereby permit movement of the clamping legs toward and away from each other. Movement of the clamping legs toward each other reduces a cross dimension of the split collar to thereby clamp one of the image modifying devices therein. Conversely, movement of the clamping legs away from each other increases a cross dimension of the split collar to thereby release a clamped image modifying device. One of the image modifying devices may be in the form of a scope, while another of the image modifying devices may be in the form of a fiber optic viewer. The fiber optic viewer includes a fiber optic bundle that is divided into first and second fiber optic segments. A forward end of the fiber optic bundle is connected to the ocular end of the scope for transferring an image incident at the first image modifying device to a rearward end of each fiber optic segment. One of the segments may be connected to a digital video camera for recording or transmitting the image, and another of the segments may be connected to an eyepiece for simultaneously viewing the image by a user. Other image modifying devices, such as a night vision monocular, may be connected through a further quick release clamp to the opposite end of the scope for viewing images in low light conditions.
