A device for holding the end of perforated photographic film comprises means for loose engagement in the perforation of the film and guard means preventing casual disengagement of the film during winding thereof around the device in both directions, the guard means being spaced from the engagement means to enable the end of the film to pass therebetween and the device being so constructed that, in both directions of winding, the lengths of the film on opposite sides of the engagement means are only bent relatively to one another through an acute angle. As shown, a core 1 of a film spool has a cylindrical recess 1a parallel to its axis and opening into its periphery. An insert 2 formed by a metal plate bent into a hollow cylinder is placed in recess 1a, and has tongues 2a, 2b formed on one of its juxtaposed edges and passing below the other edge 4 which comprises a guard member. A film end 3 can be inserted between the edges, the perforations 3a engaging the tongues. The film can then be wound in either direction on the core without any sharp bending of the film.

    • 723,276. Photographic roll-film developing tanks. KEHR, W., and STRAUSS, R. Sept. 17, 1952 [Sept. 20, 1951], No. 23387/52. Addition to 703,732. Class 98 (2). In a developing tank according to the parent Specification, a catch is provided between the auxiliary chamber and the winding-on core in the processing chamber, and comprises means for engaging the perforations at the end of a film which is not fixed to holding means and therefore becomes free on leaving the auxiliary chamber. As shown, the tank has an auxiliary chamber I separated from the processing chamber 3 by a partition 9. A cassette 2 is placed in chamber 1 and the end of the film 5 is fastened to a core 4 which is rotated to draw the film out of the cassette. A plate 10 is bent to have a U-shaped part fitting over partition 9 and flanges (not shown) resting on ledges 11 within the tank, and has hooks 10a spaced apart by the distance between the rows of perforations on the film. The tank is designed for cassettes in which the inner end of the film is not fastened in the cassette. When this end leaves the chamber 1, it engages the hooks 10a. A crank 8 is operated from outside the chamber to hold the film end on the hooks. Development then proceeds, the core 4 being rotated in alternate directions, as described in the parent Specification.
