    • An audio digital integrated circuit (28), together with a microphone (24), loudspeaker (18), and battery (26), comprise an audio recording and playback unit (16) which is incorporated into a personalized gift to permit simultaneous enjoyment of both the gift and a personalized audio message recorded thereon. The gift may include a framed picture (14) or photograph (14) with the audio unit (16) being mounted in the frame (12) and having a playback switch (22) easily accesible for actuation by the recipient of the gift. A record switch (20) is included on the audio unit (16) and recessed to prevent unintentional erasure of the recorded message. Alternatively, the audio unit (16) and playback switch (22) may be mounted on a separate picture holder (34) independent of the frame (12). The audio unit (16) may further be incorporated into a festive or decorative holder (48) representative of a special occasion, with the holder (48) being mounted or secured to a personalized gift closely associated with the festive holder (48).

    • An automatic telephone recorder includes a computer equipped with a sound signal handling feature and a digital recording medium such as a disk drive. The sound signal handling feature includes an audio input, an audio output and programmable means for selectively effecting digital recording on the recording medium of an audio signal applied to the sound signal handling means input. A line transformer is connected between a telephone line pair and the sound signal handling means audio input. The sound signal handling means is programmed to periodically test the sound signal handling means audio input to determine if audio or a predetermined transient signal, indicating that the telephone line has gone from an on-hook condition to an off-hook condition, is present. If the audio or transient signal is present, the sound signal handling means is programmed to institute recording of any audio signal present at the sound signal handling means audio input for as long as such audio remains. In one embodiment, a pulse stretcher circuit responds to sensing the presence of the pulse by generating a time-extended signal which the sound signal handling means can sample, thus relieving the computer from the necessity to continuously sample the transient signal source at a relatively high rate which ties up the central processor resources.

    • A method, and apparatus for practicing the method, for eliminating the necessity for manually dialing, on a wireless telephone, a local area code as a prefix to a call within the same area code in telephone systems in which such action is a requirement. Before a calling party institutes a call on a cellular telephone, the area code is semi-permanently stored in the cellular telephone. During the dialing process, after the seventh digit has been dialed and before an eighth digit has been dialed, a determination is made as to whether the "send" button has been actuated. If so, then the stored area code is prefixed to the seven dialed digits, and the resulting ten digit number is transmitted. If not, then the dialing continues until the "send" button is actuated at which time the fully dialed number is transmitted. Typically, the latter condition indicates that a long distance call is in process. Thus, in a preferred embodiment, a determination is made that eleven digits have been dialed, and those eleven digits are transmitted. Because a cellular telephone is portable by nature, provision is made to update the automatically-prefixed area code when the cellular telephone is moved to a different area code.

    • A call defeat device to prevent calling unauthorized numbers, such as long distance, 1-900 etc., which is adapted to prevent a caller from successfully dialing one or more predetermined digit strings on a touch tone telephone connected to a given telephone line by apparatus including a touch tone decoder coupled to the telephone line and a microprocessor/memory for storing and issuing predetermined unauthorized digit strings, if dialed on the telephone, designates that the call is to be defeated. A comparator compares each digit string dialed on the telephone to the predetermined digit strings, an d, if a match is sensed, a dialer sends onto the telephone line at least one DTMF digit, such as a "#", which will defeat the call in progress. In a variant of th e unauthorized call defeat apparatus, if an unauthorized digit string is dialed, a mode of operation can be selected in which an audio tone, falling outside the standard passbands of all tones representing dialed digits, is applied to the telephone line so as to "jam" and thus prevent any meaningful communication on the line. The invention can be implemented as a stand alone device or incorporated into a telephone.
