A bridge circuit for measuring the resistance of, for example, the human body, comprises resistive arms R 1 R 4 and arms containing batteries B 1 B 2 the latter shunted by the range control and balancing resistor R 5 , the input being connected across 1, 2 and the detector comprising a transistor amplifier. The latter includes an input emitter follower stage TR1, R7, and two further transistors TR2, TR3, the amount of negative feedback being adjusted by a variable resistance R16 so that when no measurement is being made, the amplifier output can be made to balance out the battery voltage so that the pointer of meter M1 can be set to a fixed mark. A switch S4 connects the meter to the amplifier output for measurement, to a transit terminal 10 or to a battery test terminal 9, resistors R18, R12 being connected across batteries B1 B2 in the latter position and, if the battery voltage is correct, the meter deflection corresponds to a preset battery test position (Fig. 4, not shown). Initial adjustment of the bridge is made when there is no input and switch S 1 is closed thus placing a resistor R10 across the input, R2 being then adjusted for balance and R5 being set to a predetermined value.
