[Class 81(ii)] An artificial hand is provided with a releasable device which can hold the fingeroperating mechanism locked in any position within the range of movement of the fingers and has means, operable by the wearer, capable of rendering the releasable device inoperative so that the wearer retains control over the finger-operating mechanism. As shown, the frame 1 of an artificial hand is provided with a toothed rack (not shown) controlling movement of the fingers and sliding between two members, one of which is shown at 17. A pawl 19 is urged by spring 20 into engagement with the rack to lock the fingers, release of the pawl being effected through cable 5 and lever 2 acting on stud 18 secured to pawl 19. The locking means may be rendered inoperative by depression of button 10 which moves pin 6 into the path of lever 2 and holds pawl 19 disengaged, spring 8 then urging lever 2 into contact with the pin and preventing its release. To render the locking means operative again a pull is applied to cable 5, releasing the pin 6. Cable 5 may be operated from a lever secured to a hand bucket or to the wearer's arm.
