Converting reciprocating into rotary motion and vice versa. - Relates to a device for converting reciprocating into rotary motion, and vice versa, of the type in which a pinion mounted upon the cranked portion of a rotary shaft rolls within a stationary internal gear of twice its diameter and is connected at a point on its pitch circle to the reciprocating member. The invention comprises an arrangement characterized by one or more eccentric sheaves integral with the rolling pinion, rotatably mounted upon a straight shaft portion which is rigidly secured to the crank arms on the main shaft, the said sheave being surrounded by a circular strap on the reciprocatory member. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, toothed pinions 3, 4, together with an integral eccentric sheave 5, are mounted upon a straight shaft portion 11 rigidly secured to the ends of crank arms 13, on a divided shaft 16, 17, the pinions 3, 4 being adapted to roll within stationary internal gears 8, 9 of twice the diameter. The eccentric 5 is counterbalanced by weights 19, 20, the cranked portion of the shaft 16 being balanced by weights 14, 18. The sheave 5 is engaged by a strap 21 on the reciprocating member, which, as shown, comprises double piston members on each side of the crank-shaft. A modification is described in which two eccentric members 5 on diametrically opposite sides of the axis and situated in parallel planes are arranged between the gear-pinions 3, 4, and are adapted to be utilized in connexion with from one to four engines. An arrangement of this kind with a number of engines of the kind described in Specification 2335/12 is shown.
