摘要： An elongate fixing device has a head 2 and an elongate shank 4, the head having a slot 3 or the like enabling the device to be turned about the longitudinal axis of the shank by a suitable tool (such as a screwdriver). The shank has a sharp pointed tip 8 remote from the head and, intermediate the pointed tip and the head, in the order specified, a plain, non-threaded outwardly partly tapering shank portion 7 and an externally threaded shank portion 6 extending between the plain shank portion and the head. The sharp pointed tip and the plain shank portion can be hammered into an object of wood or the like, and the device can then be driven further by means of a screwdriver or the like.

Converting reciprocating into rotary motion and vice versa. - Relates to a device for converting reciprocating into rotary motion, and vice versa, of the type in which a pinion mounted upon the cranked portion of a rotary shaft rolls within a stationary internal gear of twice its diameter and is connected at a point on its pitch circle to the reciprocating member. The invention comprises an arrangement characterized by one or more eccentric sheaves integral with the rolling pinion, rotatably mounted upon a straight shaft portion which is rigidly secured to the crank arms on the main shaft, the said sheave being surrounded by a circular strap on the reciprocatory member. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, toothed pinions 3, 4, together with an integral eccentric sheave 5, are mounted upon a straight shaft portion 11 rigidly secured to the ends of crank arms 13, on a divided shaft 16, 17, the pinions 3, 4 being adapted to roll within stationary internal gears 8, 9 of twice the diameter. The eccentric 5 is counterbalanced by weights 19, 20, the cranked portion of the shaft 16 being balanced by weights 14, 18. The sheave 5 is engaged by a strap 21 on the reciprocating member, which, as shown, comprises double piston members on each side of the crank-shaft. A modification is described in which two eccentric members 5 on diametrically opposite sides of the axis and situated in parallel planes are arranged between the gear-pinions 3, 4, and are adapted to be utilized in connexion with from one to four engines. An arrangement of this kind with a number of engines of the kind described in Specification 2335/12 is shown.

Toothed gearing. - In toothed hypocycloidal gearing for converting rotary into reciprocating motion, or vice versa, applicable to locomotives &c., the rolling pinion 14 is rotatably mounted within an eccentrically - disposed and countersunk recess g in a crank disk or plate 11 integral with the rotary member 12, and engages the stationary internal gear member e formed on the inner edge of a fixed block 10 having a suitable concentric recess a within which the disk 11 is seated. The rolling pinion 14 is retained on the crank-pin 13 by means of a flat washer 15 and screw m, and is formed with an outer flange portion 14 , occupying an enlarged part g of the recess g in an outer flange part 11 of the disk 11. Projecting from the rolling pinion 14 at its pitch radius, a second crank-pin 16 is connected to the reciprocatory member by means of a rod 19, being additionally guided by means of a slide box 18 and guide-bars 17 spaced apart by blocks 10 on a frame 10 which supports the fixed block 10.
