    • PURPOSE: To execute tuning for a wide range and to generate a short pulse having the continuation time of the order of pico second and femto second by exciting a laser medium constituted of a forsterite single crystal where tervalent chrome ions are doped and maintaining discharged coherent radiation. CONSTITUTION: The laser medium 13 is constituted of the single crystal of forsterite (Cr:Mg2 SiO4 ) and the dope quantity of chrome is set to be the range of about 0.01-0.5 atom%. The crystal is generated in a long bar. A pumping source 15 can be the appropriate pumping light source of in-coherent or coherent wave, a continuous wave or a pulse wave, which excites the laser medium 13. End mirrors 17 and 19 have coating designed to show a maximum reflection factor along the bandwidth of about 1150-1350Å. The bandwidth of 1150-1350Å covers a frequency range where coherent light is generated. The end mirrors 17 and 19 are detached by appropriate distance suitable for forming optical resonance cavity, and the bar 13 is arranged along the focus of the end mirror. The output radiation of a laser device 11 is radiated from the end mirror 19.

    • A layer system in which the laser medium is a single crystal of Cr³⁺:Mg₂Si0₄ is disclosed. In one embodiment, the system comprises a single crystal of chromium doped forsterite and a cavity which includes a pair of 30 cm radius mirror having high transmission at 532 nm (the pump wavelength) and high reflectivity in the 1150-1350 nm range. Room temperature vibronic pulsed laser action is obtained with this cavity. Laser action has been observed at 1215 nm and a bandwidth of 20 nm and 1235 nm at a bandwidth of 20 nm. The wavelength range is suitable for transmission through optical fibers and is useful in laser ranging and remote sensing. Because of the ultrawide fluorescence bandwidth and a 15 fluroescence lifetime the system is suitable for high intensity, tunable, cw, Q switched mode locked operation. In the mode locked operation pulses as short as 10-500 femtosecond may be generated. A number of different embodiments of the invention are described.
