    • 18,790. Le Page, J. F. Sept. 30. Registering at a distance electrically; registering observation by instruments.-An electric step-bystep apparatus for recording the indications of a physical instrument, such as a gauge, a clinical thermometer, or magnetic or electric measuring- instrument, is arranged to operate the control pallets of an escapement electrically, thereby allowing a clockwork train to move the recording- pen. A spindle c, Fig. 2, moved directly or through gearing by the instrument, carries on an arm two swing contact-pieces d , d , one or other of which, according to the direction of motion, strikes other platinum-iridium surfaces upon upstanding projections f, f arranged at short intervals around an insulating-disc E and fast to silver base rings F, F . The record strip passes from a clock-driven carrier-drum T, Fig. 5, on to the spring receiving-drum T', and is marked by a transversely moving pencil X, the holder for which is guided by the rods U, U' and is placed according to the indication of the instrument by a cord W passing over pulleys and around the driving-wheel W ,controlled by the contact-maker as follows. The spring of the clock train G tends to rotate the wheels L, L', the two pins N on each of which are arranged to lift the detent o at the moment the wheel W receives an impulse, but this can only take place when one or other of the two electromagnets Q, Q , Fig. 7, is energized and the channelled escapement members S, S' allow the pin discs R, R on the pinions to move, the connections being as shown. The apparatus may be arranged to operate only between certain limits on the main instrument scale, and electric contacts may befitted on the guide-rod U' to enable the attainment of certain readings to be announced by bell.

    • 21,318. Le Page, J. F. Oct. 9. Hulls. - Comprises improvements in boats whereby the fore-wash or waves produced by the bow are either utilized to reduce the resistance to propulsion or are diverted so that no detrimental effect is prodnced on the banks of canals and rivers. The sides of the hull A are provided with outwardly and downwardly projecting plates B, which extend from a short distance from the bow to a point abaft the midship section. These plates arrest the ascent of the waves produced at great speeds and assist in raising the boat in the water, so that the resistance to propulsion is reduced. To divert the fore-wash, boats are constructed with parallel sides, Fig. 8, terminating forward in cutwaters. Between the sides of the vessels a channel is formed, the sides of which are of the same shape as the sides of an ordinary hull. To prevent the detrimental action of fore-wash in ordinary vessels, vertical plates are supported at some distance from their sides at the bows and parallel with their central longitudinal plane.
