    • Methods, systems, and apparatus for assessing a state of a primary disease or a comorbidity associated with a primary disease are provided. The methods comprise receiving at least one autonomic index, neurologic index, stress marker index, psychiatric index, endocrine index, adverse effect of therapy index, physical fitness index, or quality of life index of a patient; comparing the at least one index to at least one reference value; and assessing a state of a primary disease or a body system of the patient that is a site of the comorbidity, based on the comparison. A computer readable program storage device encoded with instructions that, when executed by a computer, perform a method described above is also provided. A medical device system capable of implementing a method described above is also provided.

    • Methods, systems, and apparatus for detecting a seizure in a patient. The determination is performed by collecting cardiac data; determining valid heart beats suitable for seizure detection from the cardiac data; calculating heart rate data of interest from the valid heart beats; and identifying a seizure event from the heart rate data. The medical device may then take a responsive action, such as warning, logging the time of the seizure, computing and storing one or more seizure severity indices, and/or treating the seizure. Also, methods for quantifying the quality of a fiducial time marker for a candidate heart beat, quantifying the quality of a candidate heart beat, or determining a time of beat sequence of the patient's heart. Also, methods of modifying constraints use in one or more beat validity tests.

    • Methods, system and apparatus for identifying extreme epileptic events are provided. In one aspect, an inter-seizure interval (ISI) value related to at least two seizure events is determined, compared to a reference value, and an extreme seizure event is determined from the comparison. In another aspect, a first seizure event is detected, and a body index affected by the seizure is determined. An extreme seizure event is determined when a second seizure event occurs prior to the body index value returning to a reference value. Another method includes determining an one index from body data, identifying a seizure event based upon the index, determining at least one seizure severity index (SSI) value for the seizure, comparing the SSI value to a reference value, and determining an extreme seizure event from the comparison. A further method includes determining an increased risk of death and responding to the increased risk.
