摘要： An apparatus and method for applying coatings to yarns (13), particularly yarns (13) to be utilized as dental floss. In a preferred arrangement, an array of parallel spaced yarns (13) are continuously fed while being intermittently deflected by a cam or deflector (15). As the yarns (13) are deflected, they enter a grooved liquid applicator (12), with the grooves (12) maintaining a predetermined amount of liquid therein by capillary action. A predetermined amount of liquid is thus applied at intermittent or spaced locations along the length of the yarn (13). The method and apparatus is particularly suitable for providing dye at spaced locations along a continuous length of floss, thereby demarcating lengths suitable for individual use. Various aspects are also applicable to a variety of yarn coating and/or dyeing applications.

摘要： A process for manufacturing a continuous dental floss brush comprising alternating portions of thread sections which do not stretch significantly under tension and brush sections which stretch under slight tension, including the step of coating at least the thread sections of a reverse twisted high tenacity nylon yarn (10) with a solution of polymer in a volatile solvent, the polymer being nylon, polyurethane or mixtures thereof. The thread sections of the yarn (10) are thereafter heated to vaporize solvent therefrom while the yarn (10) is maintained under a tension of 0.15 to 1 N. In the humidifier assembly (18) having a housing which defines a humidifier zone (20) the brush sections of the yarn (10) are exposed to a mixture of steam and gas while the yarn (10) is under tension. Finally, the brush sections of the yarn (10) are heated to remove solvent and passed through the humidifier zone (20) under controlled tension.

摘要： A dental floss brush (2) comprises at least two thread sections (6, 8) having diameters, in their relaxed state, of at least 2.5 mm. The thread sections (6, 8) are separated by a brush section (4) having a diameter of up to 4 mm in its relaxed state and a diameter of 1.7 to 3.0 mm under a tension of 0.05 N. The brush section (4) can be coated with a low melting wax composition, optimally a polyethylene glycol ester of beeswax. This product is made by coating a reverse twisted, high tenacity nylon yarn with a solution of polymer, selected from the group consisting of nylon, polyurethane and mixtures thereof in a volatile solvent. Then the solvent is selectively vaporized from thread portions (6, 8) while preventing vaporization of solvent from brush portions (4), while the yarn is maintained under a tension of 0.15 to 1 N. The brush portions (4) are steam treated while the yarn is under no tension until they have regained at least 100 percent of the diameter of the uncoated, relaxed yarn. Residual solvent is then removed from the brush portions (4) while the yarn is under no tension.
