    • A riser angle positioning system and process provides information for dynamically positioning a floating vessel (10) having a riser (12) extending to a wellhead on the ocean floor. The system comprises an acoustic system (46) for generating acoustic data signals representing the position of the vessel with respect to the wellhead, top (42) and bottom (44) riser inclinometers for generating respective sensor signals indicating angles of deflection of the riser at the top and bottom, respectively, thereof, and a processor (40) responsive to the acoustic data signals and the sensor signals for generating positioning information. The riser angle positioning system and process serve as a backup system and method for checking the acoustic data for large errors, and additionally provide the sole position determining system and method in case of acoustic black-out. The riser angle positioning system and process have two alternative modes of operation: a simulator mode during which the vessel position is calculated from data read from a dynamic positioning system magnetic tape log, and a real time mode during which data is read directly from analog-to-digital converters associated with the top (42) and bottom (44) inclinometers and the acoustic system (46).

    • Offshore, gravity base, jack-up platform comprising a deck (22), a gravity base (24), and one or more legs (26) interconnecting the deck and base. The gravity base comprises a generally polygonal shaped, monolithic hull structure (28) with reaction members (30) extending downwardly from the hull to penetrate the waterbed and react to vertical and lateral loads imposed upon the platform while maintaining the gravity hull in a posture elevated above the surface of the waterbed. A method aspect of the invention includes the steps of towing a gravity base, jack-up platform, as a unit, to a preselected offshore site floating upon the gravity hull. During the towing operation, the deck is mounted adjacent the gravity base with leg or legs projecting through the deck. At a preselected offshore station ballast is added to the gravity base and the platform descends slightly to a posture where the platform is buoyantly supported by the deck. The base is then jacked down toward the seabed and the platform is laterally brought onto station. Ballast is then added to the deck and the reaction members are penetrated into the waterbed to operational soil refusal. Ballast is then ejected from the deck and the deck is jacked to an operational elevation above a predetermined statistical wave crest height.

    • This invention relates to improvements in auxiliary vessels of the type used to handle the anchors, buoys, etc., used in mooring large ships such as offshore drilling vessels. The improvement comprises a bridge structure elevated above, and movable longitudinally of, the deck of the anchor handling vessel. The bridge structure includes an anti-friction support for a winch line and, when positioned near the stern of the vessel, greatly reduces the forces necessary for breaking an anchor or similar object over the stern and onto the deck of the vessel. In the preferred form, the bridge structure also mounts a powered winch or bridge crane movable transversely of the bridge which may be used for moving anchors to other cargo about the deck.
