    • The invention relates to a liquid paint pumping apparatus comprising a piston reciprocable in a cylinder to pump liquid paint during a substantially horizontal pumping stroke of the piston and to charge the cylinder with paint during a reverse stroke of the piston. The apparatus further comprises a check valve disposed within the piston, the check valve comprising: a ball member, a seat, a spring urging the ball member into engagement with the seat, and a plastics cage guiding movement of the ball towards and away from the seat. The seat receives the ball member so as to form a seal to prevent flow of liquid paint between the ball and the seat during the pumping stroke of the piston, and the ball member moves away from the seat during the reverse stroke of the piston.

    • A wavelength division multiplex (WDM) optical telecommunications network comprises a plurality of nodes interconnected by optical fiber waveguides. Communication traffic is communicated between nodes by optical radiation modulated with the communication traffic, the radiation being partitioned into aplurality (N) of wavelength channels each channel having a discrete non-overlapping waveband. Each node drops at least one of the wavelength channels to thereby define a connection to the node and adds at least one wavelength channel to the network to define a connection to another node of the network. The network is characterized is that at least one node has ascribed to it a fixed subset of the N wavelength channels and drops each of the wavelength channels of the fixed subset from the network. The node further comprises a wavelength selectable transmitter capable of adding one or more of at least any of the remaining wavelength channels other than the subset to the network to define a connection to another node of the network.

    • A paint circulating system is suitable for providing paint to applicators in a product finishing facility. The system includes a pump for pumping paint around the system and a back-pressure regulator (BPR), which substantially eliminates pressure fluctuations of paint in the system upstream of the BPR. Control means are provided for controlling the pump and the BPR to operate in one of a flow mode, wherein a required flow rate of paint around the system is maintained, and a pressure mode, wherein a pressure of paint between the pump and the BPR is maintained. The paint circulating method includes switching operation of the pump and the BPR between the flow mode and the pressure mode.

    • An optical fiber network of WDM type comprises two fibers which carry light signals propagating in opposite directions and which are arranged in a ring configuration. One standby link between two neighboring nodes is inactive but is made active if an active link fails. An add and drop node used in the network has band blocking filters connected in a fiber between a drop coupler and an add coupler, taking out a share of the light power in each direction to be received through bandpass filters in receivers and adding new wavelength channels produced in transmitters, respectively. Switches are used for receiving and transmitting on the wavelength channels in correct directions. The positions of the switches can be changed when the inactive link has to become one of the two active links directly connected to the node. A very efficient use of the wavelength channels in the network can then be achieved for nodes having a minimum of in-line components, and particularly, a minimum of in-line filtering components.

    • The system and method of the present invention provides enhanced surround sound effects. In one embodiment, 90.degree. phase shift and copy of the modified head related transfer functions (HRTF) are applied to each rear sound signal. The modified HRTF for each rear signal is generated by removing the head related transfer function corresponding to the front center signal from the HRTF corresponding to the rear sound signal. This provides the audible effect of distinguishing more clearly sounds originating in front of the listener or to the rear of the listener while not limiting the perceived bandwidth of the signal. The rear signals corresponding to the first channel are inverted. The front and rear signals for each corresponding channel are then combined. The two channels, generated can be stored on media, such as film, and subsequently read and input to a surround sound decoder to generate enhanced surround sound output.
