    • A storage device 2 for cable ties comprising multiple adjacent parallel compartments 4 each with an open 8 and closed end 10. The compartments are different lengths and are provided with securing devices 18. Ideally the open ends are coplanar. Ideally the adjacent compartments tessellate and adjoin wall to wall. Ideally the securing devices are on one side of the device and allow releasable mounting on a vertical. The retaining means can be three magnets arranged at right angles to each other but in one plane. Two magnets can be on the longest compartment and one can be on the shortest compartment near the open and/or closed ends. There can be an annular rubber gripping pad 22 surrounding and flush with each magnet. The closed end can be closed by a cap. The compartments can be rectangular and arranged side by side.

    • Disclosed are cyanine dyes that are useful for labelling and detecting biological and other materials. The dyes are of formula (I): in which groups R3 and R4 are attached to the Z1 ring structure and groups R5 and R6 are attached to the Z2 ring structure, and n=1, 2 or 3; Z1 and Z2 independently represent the carbon atoms necessary to complete a one ring, or two-fused ring aromatic system; at least one of groups R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6 and R7 is the group -E-F where E is a single bond or a spacer group and F is a target bonding group; one or more of groups R11, R12, R13 and R14 are independently selected from the group —(CH2)k—W, where W is sulphonic acid or phosphonic acid and k is an integer from 1 to 10. The dyes may be used in fluorescence labelling applications, where the presence of one and preferably multiple water solubilising groups attached to the 3-position of the indolinium ring reduces dye-dye interactions, and hence dye-dye quenching, particularly where multiple dye molecules are attached to components such as nucleic acids, oligonucleotides, proteins and antibodies.

The invention includes solid polymer bodies containing such compounds, or chelates of transition or lanthanide or actinide metals generally, the bodies having the property of emitting light or infra-red radiation when subjected to a flux of ultra-violet or ionising radiation by virtue of internally generated, e.g. by tritium ionising radiation. The body is preferably of polystyrene formed by polymerising the monomer in the presence of the compound or metal chelate.

    • Disclosed is a non-fluorescent cyanine dye that may be used as an acceptor in fluorescence energy transfer assays involving the detection of binding and/or cleavage events in reactions involving biological molecules, and assay methods utilising such dyes.
