    • A cylinder block for an automotive internal combustion engine. The cylinder block comprises a cylinder block side wall which includes a boss section located corresponding to a position between adjacent cylinders and is formed with an oil dropping passage through which lubricating oil to be returned to a crank case is introduced. In this cylinder block, the oil dropping passage is located adjacent the boss section and includes an upper passage portion, a lower passage portion, and an intermediate passage portion connecting the upper and lower passage portions. The cylinder block side wall includes an outer wall surrounding the intermediate passage portion of the oil dropping passage. The outer wall has an axially extending side section located at one side in an engine cylinder row direction. The axially extending side section linearly integrally connects the lower end of the boss section and the lower deck.

    • A cylinder block structure with a small number of ribs is provided which can favorably prevent the deformation of a crankshaft bearing portion and the like. In a cylinder block 1 having bolt holes 3 formed on the upper surface for connecting a cylinder head with bolts, arc-shaped coupling surfaces 5 formed on the rear end surface for mounting a housing, such as a transmission housing, and a crankshaft bearing portion 6 formed in the central part between the lower ends of the coupling surfaces: the upper parts of the coupling surfaces 5 are joined into an arch-shape by an arch-shaped rib 7; the lower ends of right and left bosses 4 respectively having bolt hole 3 formed therein, are extended and connected to the lower parts of the arch-shaped rib 7; and right and left main radial ribs 10, respectively extend from the outside of the lower end of the bolt hole boss 4 to the center of the crankshaft bearing portion 6.

    • In a cylinder block for an internal-combustion engine, a cap-mounting bulk portion is connected with both first and second side walls of a crankcase formed below a lower deck. Each of first and second bulk connection portions connecting the first and second side walls, respectively, with the cap-mounting bulk portion projects inwardly from the corresponding side wall. The bulk connection portion is formed with a hollow portion extending in a vertical direction of the cylinder block. The first and second bulk connection portions are connected, respectively, with first and second head bolt bosses, which are formed on an upper block wall surrounding an upper part of a cylinder of the engine, by first and second connecting ribs extending in the vertical direction.

    • A cylinder block for an internal combustion engine has a water jacket formed between cylindrically configured cylinder walls and a jacket sidewall. The cylinder walls is arranged to slideably retain pistons therein. The jacket sidewall is disposed around an external periphery of the cylinder walls. A pair of external block walls is provided on transverse sides of the cylinder block to extend almost an entire longitudinal length of the cylinder block. The external block walls are spaced apart from the jacket sidewall in a transverse direction to form gaps therebetween. The top end portions of the external block walls constitute an external flange portion of a top deck of the cylinder block. Thus, the rigidity of the top deck of the cylinder block is improved, and the sealing between the cylinder block and a cylinder head via a head gasket is improved.
