    • 122,881. Rogerson, W. H., and Bedson, N. P. Feb. 1, 1918. Addition to 112,152. Wire.-The machine for forming barbed wire described in the parent Specification is improved or modified by arranging that the cutters for the barbs move in a path substantially parallel to the welding die heads and improvements are also effected in the feed rollers for the main and transverse wires, in the welding circuit connexions, and in the winding drum for the finished wire. As shown, the welding electrodes 8, 9 are mounted in plungers 4 reciprocated in guides 1 by means of bell-cranks 7 actuated from a cam-shaft 6, and the electrodes may move relatively to the plunger against the action of adjustable springs. Alternatively, the electrodes 8, 9 may be carried at the ends of rocking levers. Cutters 14 are attached to the dies or electrodes 8, and move with these, and co-operate with adjustable cutters 15 fixed to the wire guides 20, which are secured in position by wedge-shaped members 41 so that they can be adjusted to allow for wear. The feed rollers are formed with reduced ends over which the wire passes and is normally free except when engaged for feed by adjustable segmental parts 18. The transverse wires are fed against adjustable stops, so that barbs of varying length may be cut. The dies 8, 9, Fig. 6, are in the secondary circuit of a transformer, the current to the primary coil of which is controlled by a rotary switch 27, comprising two relatively adjustable insulated disks fitted with connected metallic segments which control the timing of the current. When the dies 8, 9 move together completing the welding of the barb, contacts 22, 23 complete the primary circuit to a relay 24 which breaks the current directly, or through a contactor 26. The winding-up drum for the finished wire is driven by means of a series of planet wheels engaging a driven sunwheel, and also in engagement with a freely mounted annular gear which is braked by a brake controlled by a cable 38, Fig. 1, connected to a spring-controlled arm 31 provided with a notched wheel 30 around which the wire passes. If the drum is winding too quickly, the arm 31 is moved forwards, and the tension on the brake is relieved thereby diminishing the speed of the coil.

    • 584,338. Bolt hole bushes. PHILLIPS, N. Oct. 9, 1944, No. 19354. [Class 89 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] Relates to expansion bolt devices of the kind described in Specification 367,547 and consists in improvements in the expandible socket members described in Specification 437,297. These sockets are usually produced by casting lead and if the fingers be connected only by an annulus at the base there is difficulty in obtaining sound castings with a sufficiently high rate of production. The slots 2 separating the fingers are therefore bridged by webs 3, Fig. 2, connecting the fingers. The webs may vary in thickness in the axial direction or may be discontinuous. In a modification the additional connection is by an external annulus 3b, Fig 6. Instead of projecting, this annulus may be at the outer or inner edge of the fingers. The annulus may be preformed and placed in the mould during casting or may be applied to the socket after casting, but in this case the socket is only strengthened during handling and manufacture is not facilitated.

    • 494,976. Percussive drills. PHILLIPS, N., and CLOW, A. C. May 10, 1937, No. 13316. [Class 124] [Also in Group XXII] Boring or drilling tools are formed of case-hardened low carbon or mild steel and have the hardened skin removed from the operative end face or faces of the tool. In one form, the end of a mild steel rod 1, Fig. 1, is flattened and pointed, as shown, and a slot 4 is cut therein after which the drill is case-hardened. The cutting edges 5 are then ground to give cutting rake and to remove the hard skin so that the cutting edges may subsequently be sharpened with a file. The shank may be provided with square and circular sections 6, 7, Fig. 3, for gripping in any type of chuck. In another form the twist drill shown in Fig. 3 is produced from a mild steel strip 8, Fig. 4, which is provided with unsymmetrical V-grooves 9 in its opposite faces and further staggered grooves 12, 12 in the grooves 9. The strip is then given a quick-pitch twist 13, the end trimmed, the strip case-hardened and the cutting edges 14 ground as in Fig. 1. The central web 10 of the drill is of such thickness that the hard skin 11 extends completely therethrough and allows the web to break away at the operative end to give the effect of the slot 4 in Fig. 1. The grooves 9 may be symmetrical or may be replaced by a deeper groove in one face only, and the grooves may be formed by rolling &c. The edges 8 of the strip may be arranged at an angle other than a right-angle to the faces in order to provide acute angles on the leading edges, or the faces may be formed concave as shown in Fig. 6. The strip may be buttwelded to the shank, or the shank end of the strip may be left untwisted and built up by securing further strips to the faces. Twist drills may be produced by helically grooving a cylindrical rod and then producing a central groove or grooves to provide the thin web 10.

    • 201,608. Bedson, N. P. April 28, 1922. Nozzles for producing whirling sprays. - In spraying- apparatus of the kind in which liquid is led through a tangential inlet g to a cylindrical casing a having an outlet e the axis of the free vortex is formed and brought into line with the centre of the orifice or vice versa. For this putpose a peg or stud f, Fig. 1, may be provided coaxial with the hole c secured to the floor of the casing. Instead of or in addition to the peg f the cover c may be provided with a depending annular flange i extending below the opening g but leaving sufficient clearance for the passage of liquid underneath it. In a further modification, the outlet is formed eccentric to the axis of the casing. To allow of the position of the orifice being changed, the cover may be made adjustable relatively to the casing, or the vortex may be displaced relatively to the cover by moving the peg as shown in Fig. 3, where the peg f is eccentrically mounted on a disc f which is eccentrically mounted in the casing a and retained in its adjusted position bv a nut f .
