    • A vehicle lane departure warning system and method are provided. The system includes a position sensor for sensing position of a vehicle and memory storing learned vehicle path data. The system further includes a controller for processing the position data and determining a stored learned vehicle path that the vehicle is travelling on. The controller comprises logic for comparing the sensed position data to the stored learned vehicle path and determining if the vehicle is sufficiently departing from the stored learn vehicle path. The system further includes an output for providing a warning signal indicative of the vehicle departing from the stored learned vehicle path. The stored learned vehicle path is updated as the vehicle repeatedly travels on the path.

    • A dual function capacitive occupant detection sensor includes a capacitive load cell disposed below a seat cushion, an electric field emitter disposed above the seat cushion and a capacitance-responsive control circuit. The control circuit determines a seated weight of an occupant based on the load cell capacitance, and a coupling of the electric field through an occupant based on the capacitance between the electric field emitter and the vehicle ground. The measured seated weight and electric field coupling parameters are logically combined to detect an occupant and to distinguish between a normally seated occupant and a cinched down infant or child seat of similar apparent weight.

    • An impact sensing apparatus includes a laterally extending air channel within a block of foam or other crushable medium disposed between a bumper fascia and a rigid bumper frame element, and one or more airflow sensors for detecting airflow within the air channel. The air channel may be defined by a flexible hollow tube embedded within the crushable medium or by a molded-in air cavity in cases where the crushable medium is formed by molding. The measured airflow provides a measure of crush rate, and two or more airflow sensors may be distributed within the air channel to optimize impact detection response time and to identify the impact location.

    • A plurality of optical projectors focus telltale messages, one at a time, onto a vehicle instrument panel display area. In one embodiment a logic circuit assigns priority to the messages and displays only the message of higher priority when more than one message is prompted. The projection lamps are high intensity LEDs arranged in parallel but having diodes in series with lower priority lamps to hold them off when a higher priority lamp is energized. A constant current source regulates the LED current. In another embodiment two message lamps are controlled by a logic circuit such that when both are prompted for display an oscillator causes the messages to be displayed alternately, but when either message alone is prompted, its lamp will be energized continuously.
